Joseph (Joe) Marshall, of Syosset, New York, passed away on January 27, 2022, at the age of 102. Joe was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 10, 1919, to Selma and Isador. He was the oldest of 3 children, his sister Rochelle, who predeceased him, and his brother Myron. In 1943, he married the love of his life, Clarice. The two met at work and enjoyed a rich 60 years of marriage together before Clarice's death in 2003. With their 3 daughters, Paula, Darcy, and Louise, the family moved from Stuyvesant Town, Manhattan to Syosset in 1956, to continue a life of love, creativity, and laughter.
Joe had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. He enjoyed reading about history, watching old war movies, listening to music – Opera, Broadway show tunes, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette Macdonald, John Philip Sousa, and Louis Prima, just to name a few. He had an innate ability to experience life with poise.
Even as pandemics (he lived through the Spanish Flu and COVID-19), economic downturns (Joe was 10 years old when the Great Depression began), and a world war (he served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII from 1943-1945 stationed in England) infected humanity's existence, he maintained his belief that life was worth living, and contentment comes to those who accept life as it is.
Joe always had the latest photography equipment, and in his later years, he continued to embrace new technology. In retirement, he learned to use a computer which led him to emailing with his family around the world, browsing the world wide web, following the news online, day trading on AmeriTrade, and using his iPad for daily FaceTime calls with his family.
Pair this with the stories he shared of the first (wooden!) sidewalks getting installed in his Bensonhurst neighborhood in Brooklyn when he was a young child and you see the breadth of life he has experienced. Joe was a man who embraced the changing world.
At his 102nd birthday, Joe was spritely, enjoying one of his favorite desserts, chocolate cake, made by his daughter Louise. He enthusiastically participated in his Silver Sneakers Exercise class for over 15 years right up until Covid canceled all in-person classes. He loved taking photos, cooking, and his daily dose of dark chocolate.
Most of all he loved his family.
He is survived by his daughters, Darcy and her husband David, of Concord, MA, and Louise and her husband Michael, of Newton MA. His beloved daughter, Paula, predeceased him in 2010. Joe is survived by three grandsons, Ilan and his wife Clara, Alex, and Theo; and 2 great grandchildren, Addison Rose, and Shiloh Joseph.
