Obituary

Joseph Francis King, Jr. passed away peacefully on November 19th . He was a life long resident of Concord, having been born at Emerson Hospital on June 2nd, 1925. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Carolyn Phyllis (Young) King, his parents, Joseph F. King, and Genevieve (Hearn) King, his sisters Helen McCoy and Marion Frizzle, as well as his son Scott Lincoln King. He leaves his brother John "Jack" King, four living children, Carolyn Susan "Sue" King of N. Granby, CT, Joseph "Jeff" King of Petersham, MA, Meredith King of Manchester, NH, and Pamela "Pam" Robinson of Anacortes, WA. He also leaves twelve grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Joe and many generations of the King family were members of Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in West Concord. Joe received all of the sacraments there until the Church was sold. He was an altar boy during his childhood, and volunteered for various activities as an adult. Joe graduated from Concord High School in June 1943 and in August was enrolled in the Army. After basic training he shipped out of Norfolk, VA on a Liberty ship and landed at Brindisi, Italy after nearly a month at sea. Joining the 88th Division, he fought in Italy, and was captured as a German prisoner of war. He and two friends escaped and rejoined US Forces. When he returned to Concord after the War he purchased a 1938 Harley Davidson and met his future wife Carolyn while working as a lifeguard at White Pond. They enjoyed several years of biking with friends all over the northeast. He became an oil burner repairman, and then started his own sheet metal business, and continued to work into his 80's. He did contract work for Haartz Auto Fabric in Acton for many years, and said they were the best bunch of guys he ever worked with. He loved skiing, swimming, golf, ice hockey, riding his Harley Davidson, target practicing, spending time at the beach, going to Bermuda, building motorized vehicles for his kids, and spending time with his family around the pool in the summer. Every winter he cleared a skating area on Warner's Pond where the neighborhood kids could play hockey or skate. His passion for hockey allowed him to play with the Bruin's farm team after the War. He played with retired players into his 50's. In most recent years he enjoyed sitting on the back porch watching the wildlife in the yard and on the Pond. He was raking leaves just before his latest and final heart attack. Being active was an integral part of his life, as was his very dry sense of humor. He volunteered at the Reformatory teaching prisoners sheet metal skills. In turn, they carved a leather clock for him in appreciation of his time. He was very generous with his time, money and energy, never turning down a request for help. His family held a private service and burial at Woodlawn Cemetery in Acton where he joined his wife Carolyn and son Scott. Contributions in his memory can be made to Emerson Hospital Health Care Foundation, for Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, c/o Development Office, 133 ORNAC, Concord, MA 01742. Arrangements are under the care of the Dee Funeral Home of Concord.
