John F. Paulson, PhD,a research chemist who worked at the Air Force Geophysics Lab at Hanscom Field, Bedford, died August 3rd, 2010 at the Sunny Acres Nursing Home after a long illness. He was 80 years old.
He was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated from Moses Brown School in Providence and Haverford College in Pa. and then earned aPhD in chemistry from the University of Rochester. He joined AFGL in 1959 and worked there until he retired. In 1986 he was therecipient of two prestigious Air Force awards for his research.
His contributions to atmospheric chemistry were internationally recognized through his research into a high pressure ion sourceand his work in negative ion chemistry.
He contributed to 94 technical meetings, published more than 110 papers in professional journals, and wrote chapters for 11technical books. He served as president of the Hanscom chapter of Sigma Xi and was a member of the American Physical Society,the American Chemical Society, the American Geophysical Union, and the American Society of Mass Spectrometry.
His greatest leisure pleasure was being on the ocean sailing his boat off the coast of Maine.
He is survived by Marjorie, his wifeof 55 years, a son, David of Jay, Vt., a daughter, Suzanne Paulson, PhD and her husband Tyronne Callahan, PhD of Santa Monica, Ca., and two grandchildren, Micaela and Ry Callahan-Paulson, and a springer spaniel, Annie.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 5th, from 7 to 9 p.m.in the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, CONCORD CENTER.
Memorial service will be on Friday, August 6th at 10 a.m. in the First Religious Society in Carlisle, 27 School Street, Carlisle, MA.
Interment will be private.
