John J. O'Toole, 90, a sixty-year resident of Belmont, died Thursday September 12, 2019 at a long-term care facility in Concord following a long battle with lung disease. He was the beloved brother of the late James W. O'Toole and a beloved and wonderful uncle to Elizabeth and Mary O'Toole and granduncle to Brigid and Nicholas Prayson and Emily, Domenic and James Mazzola.
Born in Boston on June 13, 1929, he was the son of the late James E. and Helen Gertrude (Scollard) O'Toole. He attended Boston public schools, Boston English High School and attended Bentley College where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. John served in the National Guard and cared for his mother during World War II, while his older brother was stationed overseas.
For many years, prior to his retirement, Mr. O'Toole was employed as a corporate accountant and later as Financial Controller for local companies including Fanny Farmer Candies, and Swenson's Ice Cream. In retirement he retained his interest in accounting and technology and became very adept at using computers and enjoyed maintaining detailed spreadsheets and using a variety of software programs to create calendars, photo albums and music collections.
A resident of Belmont since 1955, he was a devoted communicant of Our Lady of Mercy Church in Belmont, more recently of Sacred Heart Church in Watertown and toward the end of his life he was part of the Holy Family Parish community in Concord. He was an avid gardener, talented sewer -- able to create chair cushions, curtains and table linens, and marvelous baker. His homemade rolls were the highlight of every holiday dinner. He enjoyed listening to classical music as well as anything recorded by Frank Sinatra. He had a vast music collection and loved spending time cataloguing his collection and creating themed CDs. He was a staunch Democrat with informed opinions and always stayed current watching the evening news.
Survivors include his nieces, Elizabeth E. O'Toole and her husband Richard Prayson of Shaker Heights, Ohio and Mary P. O'Toole and her husband Domenic Mazzola of Concord. He was also the proud grandfather of Brigid and Nicholas Prayson and Emily, Domenic and James Mazzola. He was an extraordinary Son, Brother, Uncle and Granduncle and delighted in spending time in the company of his family.
He made each of us feel loved and valued and very special. He took great care of his brother allowing James to stay in his own home longer. He cared about each of us, sending home-made oatmeal cookies to his nieces when they were away at school, sharing newspaper articles on topics of interest, taking pictures of his grandnieces and grandnephews at any event he attended from holidays to school concerts to Pinewood Derbies to graduations and happily printing out pictures to share with us.
He was a quiet man with deep faith and an independent spirit who managed on his own well into his eighties. He was a steady and caring presence in our lives, serving as another parent and grandparent to our family.
Family and friends will gather for a period of visitation on Saturday, September 28th from 9:30 to 10:15 am in the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center. His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center. Burial will follow at Belmont Cemetery.
