Obituary

John W. Flood, 86, of Concord, formerly of Sherborn and Naples, FL, died on Friday, June 23, 2017, surrounded by his family. For 57 years, he was the loving husband of Sabra (Steele) Flood. Born on October 16, 1930, he was the son of the late Frank Lee Flood and Elizabeth (Barnes) Flood. Growing up in Needham, he was a member of Needham High School's class of 1948. His education continued at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. From 1953 until 1956, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Mr. Flood's education prepared him for a lifelong career in Engineering, first at Jackson & Moreland in Boston, and later at Eckel Industries, Inc. in Cambridge. He was Vice President and General Manager of the Acoustics Division for Eckel upon his retirement, having been with the company for more than twenty-five years. He was a thirty year resident of Sherborn before spending time during his retirement in Falmouth, MA and Naples, FL. Three years ago, he moved to Newbury Court in Concord. For much of his life, John was an avid skier and golfer, and loved a good game of tennis. His woodworking shop brought him great joy, and some of his pieces still furnish the homes of his family. Throughout his life, he was a talented photographer. In later years, many looked forward to the Floods' annual holiday card which featured his photographs. Above all, sailing was John's passion. He set a record by racing in the Buzzard's Bay Regatta for 25 years straight on the boat he co-owned, Horizon. For years, he was a member of the Beverly Yacht Club in Marion, where he was a regular participant in the Wednesday night races with his beloved crew. In addition to his devoted wife, Sabra, he leaves behind a daughter, Melinda Flood of Concord, a son, Stephen Flood and his wife Claire of Wales, UK, a brother, Roger Flood and his wife Deborah of Prosper, TX, sister-in-law Barbara Flood of Brecksville, OH, and seven nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Frank Flood, Jr. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial service on Friday, June 30, 2017 at 11 am in the First Parish, 20 Lexington Road, Concord Center. A reception lunch will follow at the Colonial Inn in Concord. Burial will be private. Concord's Town Flag will fly at half-staff on Friday, June 30th in recognition of John's honorable military service to his country. Contributions in honor of John may be made to a cause that was dear to his heart: Habitat for Humanity of Collier County, 11145 Tamiami Trail East, Naples, FL 34113 (www.habitatcollier.org), or to the charity of one's choice.
