Obituary

John J. "Jack" Casey, Jr., 90, a longtime Concord resident, died Tuesday, May 5th at Emerson Hospital in Concord. He was the beloved husband for 54 years of the late Juliet N. (Mazzeo) Casey who died in 2004. Born on April 29, 1925 he was the son of the late John J. and Sadie (McHugh) Casey. He was raised and educated in Newton. As a young man, he ran the amusement rides and movies at Norumbega Park and later, he ran the spot light for Swing Bands of the 1930's and 1940's at the Totem Pole Ballroom in Newton. During World War II, he honorably served as a Tech Sergeant in the United States Army in the IVth Corps – 5th Army during the Italian Campaign, providing intelligence maps to front line troops. For his efforts, he was awarded the Bronze Star. Following the war, Mr. Casey was employed as a lineman for the New England Telephone Company and later as a PBX Technician at Raytheon in Waltham. During his retirement, he also worked for the Digital Equipment Corporation in Marlborough. For several years, Mr. Casey served as the Chaplain, Treasurer, and Trustee of the V.F.W. Post in Concord and Bedford. An active volunteer, he visited veterans at hospitals and nursing homes on behalf of the V.F.W. A Concord resident since 1955, Mr. Casey was a member of the Concord Lodge of Elks and a life member of the Concord Minutemen. A talented musician, he was a member of the Massachusetts Bay Colonial's Fife and Drum Corps. In addition, he was a member of the National Rifle Association. He was a longtime, active communicant of Holy Family Parish in Concord where he served regularly as an Usher. For several years, along with his wife and later his son, he decorated Veteran's graves with the American Flag in St. Bernard's Cemetery for Memorial Day. He and his wife, Juliet, enjoyed ballroom and line dancing. In his spare time, he was also an avid gardener. An automobile enthusiast, he loved classic and antique cars. Survivors include his children, Juliet N. Moran of Falmouth, John J. Casey, III of Ayer, and Linda A. Carpenter and her husband Michael J. of Chelmsford, and his grandchildren, Linda Ann Carpenter and Shelley Marie Carpenter, both of Chelmsford. Funeral will be held on Friday, May 15th at 9 am from the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center, followed by a funeral Mass at 10am in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center. Burial will follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord, where Officers of the United States Army will present military honors. Visiting hours are Thursday, May 14th from 3 to 7 pm in the Dee Funeral Home. Concord's Town Flag will fly at half-staff on Friday, May 15th in recognition of Mr. Casey's service to his country during World War II.
