John Bagley Buttrick died at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis with his loving family by his side on July 2, 2022. He was 91.
Born in Boston on April 28, 1931, he was the son of the late John and Helen (Merriam) Buttrick. Raised in Concord, John attended Fenn and Middlesex schools. He nurtured his lifelong love for the outdoors at an early age, spending countless hours exploring the beautiful Concord woods, as well as duck hunting and fishing on the Concord river. He also cherished summering on Cape Cod during adolescence. John was drafted to serve our country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge in 1955 as a Corporal, he completed his education at Boston University.
After spending years as a Stock Broker in New York and Boston, John settled on Cape Cod in 1969, receiving his Real Estate license around the same time. He later worked as an Auditor in the hospitality industry.
While residing on the Cape, John developed passions for gardening and horticulture. He also loved bird hunting and fishing. He was a fabulous chef who enjoyed all cuisines, often preparing his "famous" duck meals for relatives and friends. He admired all aspects of theatre, whether it was musicals, plays or operas. A great intellect, he was an avid reader who appreciated literature, with a keen interest in studying and reading about the Civil War. In his spare time, he took delight in writing his own poetry and music.
John leaves behind four beloved children, Whitney Farnham and her husband David, Wendy Shuck and her husband Gerald, John Buttrick, Jr. and his wife Rosa and Holly Sullivan and her husband William. He was the proud grandfather of Jon and Avery Farnham, Emma Shuck, Zachary and Will Sullivan, and step-grandfather to Carla McGrath, and her children, Casen and Gabriella. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Whitney (Hall) Buttrick, as well as two sisters, Joan Berrier and Anne Irwin.
