Dr. Johannes van Houte "{Hans}" died on June 12, 2015 of natural causes at the age of 81.
Dr. van Houte is survived by his wife Ingrid Fischer-van Houte, son Johannes van Houte and his wife Susan of Burlingame, California, and daughters Justine van Houte and her husband Matt Rutledge of Hood River, Oregon, and Grace Ryan and her husband Frederick Ryan of Concord, Massachusetts, and step-daughter Frederique Begin and her husband Adam Begin of Concord, Massachusetts. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Alyshia, Annika, & Annelies van Houte, Madeline & Sydney Ryan, Fin & Ivar van Rutledge, and Teo & Emmett Begin. He is preceded in death by sisters Riet Damen and Cor Stuurman both of Holland.
Dr. van Houte was born to Dr. Daniel van Houte and Johanna van Houte in Rotterdam, Holland on October 20, 1933. During his childhood he lived in occupied Holland during the second world war and later shared his extraordinary experiences with loved ones and students. After completing his undergraduate studies in the Netherlands he traveled to the United States where he attended and graduated from the Tufts University Dental School. He then returned to the Netherlands and studied at Utrecht University where he earned a doctorate degree in microbiology. After returning to the United States he enjoyed a long and fruitful career with Forsyth Dental Institute in Boston, Massachusetts and as an adjunct professor at Harvard University. He loved helping students prepare for careers in academia, and taught internationally.
Dr. van Houte pioneered research on dental decay and was recognized internationally in 1999 for his research by the University of Gothenburg in Sweden with an honorary doctorate degree. A former member of the Concord Country Club he was an avid tennis player and he enjoyed sailing, traveling, and conversation. He had a passionate interest in reading and having philosophical discussions, loved to play the piano, and was a concerned and a caring husband, father, grandfather, teacher and friend, and will be remembered with love and gratitude for his contributions.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1:00 pm on Thursday June 18, 2015 at The Weston United Methodist Church, 377 North Avenue Weston, MA. 02493.
