Jerome E. Manning, 77, of Acton and Orleans, MA passed away peacefully with his wife by his side on June 8, 2018. Jerry was the beloved husband of Mary (Drake) Manning for 55 years.
He was the son of Jerome E. and Florence A. (Lenz) Manning, and was raised in Wayzata, MN. Jerry studied mechanical engineering at MIT. He rowed on the varsity lightweight crew during his undergraduate years and in his senior year, he was awarded MIT's highest athletic award, the Straight T, when his boat qualified to row at the Henley Royal Regatta, England. Jerry continued to study at MIT earning four degrees culminating in his Ph.D., which he received just after the birth of his first child!
In 1967 Jerry founded CCI, a noise and vibration consulting firm. He was elected a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America in 1993 and cited "for his contributions toward the development and application of Statistical Energy Analysis to structural acoustics". Jerry loved his work and especially loved having his company become a family enterprise; he never retired and now his children Patty and Steve will continue in his footsteps.
Jerry and Mary lived in Concord, MA, for 46 years before moving to Acton, MA in 2015. In 2005 they bought a house in Orleans, MA where they spent their happiest hours with their children and grandchildren as well as many friends. They also had a condo in Scottsdale where they reunited with Minnesota family. For over 50 years, they traveled with friends and family, enjoying ski trips in the early years and cruises later. Through the years, bridge games were central to their social life. Bridge friends are among Jerry's oldest and also newest friends.
Jerry is survived by his wife Mary and their three children, Patty and her husband Brad Burdick of West Hartford, CT, Steve and his wife Lisa Neale of Golden, CO, and John of Acton, MA. He was a very active grandfather with Stephen's children, Katherine, Chris, Matt, and Ben; Patty's children, Madison and Reed, and John's children, Cooper, Megan and Jack. He loved to foster each child's personality and talents and was a champion for everyone in his family.
The family will welcome visitors at Dee Funeral Home, Concord, from 6-8pm on Friday, June 22nd. Jerry will be buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, MA. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to MIT rowing in Jerry's name at https://giving.mit.edu/jerome-manning.
