Jeanette Coghlan Elwood died Saturday, July 18, in Concord, MA. She was 93.
Jean was born April 21, 1927, in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island in Washington State – a place she loved and always carried with her.
The daughter of a German-American schoolteacher born in Montana and an Irish-American lime kiln foreman, Jean attended Washington State University and graduated from the University of Washington with a BS/RN degree. She was a dedicated public health nurse, providing home visits to patients in the Tenderloin and Chinatown neighborhoods of San Francisco in the early 1950s. After the birth of her son, David, in 1953, she shifted her focus to raising her children and homemaking. In the early 70s, she re-entered the workforce, first as a volunteer public health nurse and then as a psychiatric nurse. She worked for 17 years at the Framingham Day Hospital, an innovative outpatient mental health treatment center.
Jean endured the loss of her uncle as a young girl and her father when she was twelve. She lost her brother and only sibling when she was 20. These experiences helped define her strength, commitment to family, and independence. She married Jack Elwood in April 1953, in a wedding dress she sewed herself. They lived in San Francisco, Vancouver (British Columbia), and Florida, eventually settling in Massachusetts. After a couple of years in Newton, they lived for 30 years in Framingham and for 20 years in Bourne on Cape Cod until Jack's death in 2011. She lived her remaining eight years in Concord, MA, close to her oldest son, Dave.
Jean was known for her beautiful smile, strawberry rhubarb pie, and a strength far bigger than her 5'3" frame. She loved the beach and her grandchildren, and shared with Jack a lifelong curiosity for travel and learning. She leaves a legacy of blueberry jam and apple pies, excellent taste, a passion for health—especially mental health, and resiliency. She is survived by her three children—David, Paul, and Patricia, nine grandchildren, and family, friends, and patients who are all better for having known her.
Immediate family has gathered privately. A memorial service will be planned for next year.
Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
