She was born September 28, 1927 in Cleveland Ohio, the daughter of Helen (Slowey) Smith and Clement Smith. Jean graduated from Harvey High School in Painesville Ohio and Trinity College in Washington DC. She received a Masters in Theater from Catholic University of America and pursued her professional career in Washington D.C. and New York City. Jean worked at the Arena Stage in Washington and she was assistant to Alan Schneider on Off-Broadway shows and to Authors' and Artists' Representative Audrey Wood in New York.
She was a Director of Field Entertainment with the U.S. Army in Germany where she married her husband, USAF Lt.Col. Frederick Reinhard in 1955. They started a family in New York and finally settled near Boston in 1970. Jean taught community college classes in Speech and Communication. Fred retired from active duty in 1961 and stayed with the Air Force until he retired in 1986. Jean obtained a second Masters in Communications from Boston University. She produced and directed plays with Concord Players community theater and was an active volunteer with the League of Women Voters.
Jean lived with her daughter and remained active and independent her whole life. She had a green thumb and loved to garden. She relied on a walker but continued to drive her car till the age of 94. Jean stayed connected with theater, the arts, literature and world affairs. She attended professional and repertory theater in Boston for decades along with the MFA and the Symphony. An avid reader she subscribed to major newspapers and magazines and always had a new book in her hand.
Jean's ashes will be interred with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery. A remarkable soul she will be warmly remembered and deeply missed.
