Obituary

Jean Phillips Kelly, 75, of Concord, MA passed away on September 19, 2009 surrounded by family. Born in Hollywood, California, Jeannie moved to Concord in 1939, where she touched the lives of friends, family members, neighbors, and strangers alike. In 1952, she graduated from Concord Academy, and later that year married Robert Bumford. Jeannie was an accomplished piano player. For years on Wednesday nights, she appeared at HoJos or the Colonial Inn, where she and her band had the joint jumping with Dixieland jazz. She also volunteered her musical talent countless times, playing at town events and for seniors living in assisted living. In 1967, Jeannie began volunteering at the Emerson Hospital in Concord, following in the footsteps of her mother, who had volunteered in the autoclave room. Jeannie was a bright light in the coffee shop for 37 years, greeting hospital staff by name, getting to know their stories, and dispensing coffee and banana bread, which she made at home twice a week. In 2004, she retired with her 9,000-hour pin. Throughout her life, Jeannie was a caretaker for family members through sickness and final illness, and she provided a roof, a gift, a hand-knitted sweater, and an encouraging word when one was needed. She leaves her beloved partner Gerald P. O\'Neil of Concord; son Linwood Bumford and his wife Marie Nardi of Natick MA; son Robert Bumford and his wife Holly Bevan-Bumford of Everson WA; daughter Seanna Deerheart of Concord, MA; grandchildren Jennifer Bumford of Atlanta GA, Christopher Bumford and his wife Anna of Phoenix AZ, and Keeley Bumford of Sumas, WA; great-granddaughter Lyla Katherine Bumford; brother William O. Phillips and his wife Betsy of East Dennis; and one nephew and three nieces. Jeannie was the sister of the late Reginald Phillips of Concord, MA. Service: A Funeral Service was held on Friday, October 9, 2009 in the First Parish in Concord, 20 Lexington Road, Concord Center. Officiating was the Reverend Gary E. Smith.
