Obituary

Jean H. Hill, formerly of Concord, Mass., died of heart disease on November 5, 2017 in Hingham, Mass. She was predeceased by John W. Hill, Jr., her husband of 53 years. In 2012, at age 84, Jean spearheaded a successful effort to ban single-serve bottled water in Concord. The ban, the first of its kind in the United States, gained national attention, highlighting the issues of plastic waste and water privatization and inspiring similar measures. The story of the campaign is told in the documentary film Divide in Concord. In 2015, Jean shared the Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Merit Award with campaign manager Jill Appel. Born in Brooklyn on October 28, 1927, she grew up in New York City. Upon getting her first job, at a parachute factory during the war, she tried unsuccessfully to induce union officials to press for equal pay for the female workers. Upon completing high school, she was accepted at Vermont Junior College, where she wrote for the college paper, earning an associate degree in 1944. After graduating, Jean worked for magazines such as Vogue and Time. She was hired by the Atlantic Monthly and relocated to Boston. She met her future husband John on a mountain climbing trip while living there. He went on to become an executive in sales of graphic systems and advocate for persons with intellectual disabilities. They married in 1952. The couple raised four children, living in Brooklyn and the suburbs of Chicago before moving to Concord in 1967. Before long, Jean returned to school, graduating Magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in English from Northeastern University in 1974. She then rejoined the work force, ultimately becoming an editor at MIT's Lincoln Laboratory, where she worked for many years. Her eye for beauty was reflected in her lovely homes. An expert cook, she took pleasure in entertaining with John. They travelled widely, returning to Italy several times. With the children, they enjoyed many summers at their vacation home in Maine. Highly intelligent and possessing a zest for life, Jean had a warm and engaging manner. This only partially obscured a tenacious spirit and passion for justice. The bottle ban campaign she initiated failed twice before it succeeded.. She is survived by her son John and his girlfriend Jaymie Law of Boston, her daughter Molly and her husband David Regen of New York City, her son Will and his wife Jane Adams of Acton, Mass., her son Myles and his wife Linda of Hingham, Mass., and her grandchildren Avery Regen and Paige, Tory, Mac, Myles, and Ryan Hill. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 25 at 10 a.m. at the First Parish in Concord, 20 Lexington Rd., Concord., with reception to follow. There will be a private burial at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to Corporate Accountability, 10 Milk St., Ste. 10, Boston, MA 02108.
