The much-loved and respected Jay Michael Hellman of Concord MA, passed away January 6, 2022. He was not a man of few words, nor was he a man who took life for granted. He was a man who ventured headstrong into the Peruvian jungle on a death-defying expedition and scaled the world's highest mountains. He was an avid adventurer with a love of travel. He had a business-savvy mind and a heart that was soft enough to cry happy tears and strong enough to take on the world until it wasn't.
Jay lived more lives in one lifetime than most do. He was born on September 9, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York. He came from modest beginnings where he was expected to be independent and self-sufficient. Without much support, he made the most incredible life for himself. He wore his confidence in a way that lit up a room when he walked into it. Jay climbed mountains and learned to survive at high altitudes. He worked on dairy farms milking cows and delivering calves. He was a junior Olympic trial speed skater, a movie stunt man, involved in helping the army develop food for astronauts, and a business executive. He had a story full of adventure for almost any topic. His daughters referred to Jay as their own Dos Equis man: the most interesting man in the world.
Jay received his B.S. in Food Chemistry from the University of Georgia after proudly partying out of Cornell and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. He became a condiment king who helped run prominent companies such as Diamond Crystal Salt, French's, Heinz, and Cains. In addition to these ventures, he developed a bagel business and helped introduce a British toilet bowl cleaner to the USA.
One could attribute this wide range of talent to his immense drive, hunger for knowledge of how things worked, resourcefulness, as well as his ability to relate to people on all levels. He was a man of genuine character who had great empathy and an ethical way about him that was rare in his industry as an executive.
Jay took great pleasure in biking, skiing, sailing, joking, dancing, laughing, cooking and he was pretty darn good at all of them. Above all else, Jay LOVED being a husband and dad.
He was a dedicated partner to his wife Bonnie of 43 years, an amazing dad to his two daughters Lissa and Amanda as well as his son-in-laws, and a much loved Papa to his grandchildren. He would do anything for his family, no questions asked. Jay was always the first to jump up to help with any task or give insight on a business venture. His family will miss him eternally, yet he is a part of them because they are who they are - because of who he was. Those who knew him are forever grateful for the time he could be on this earth and walk beside them.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a celebration of life in the spring of 2022 at his graveside at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord.
