Janet Marie Sawyer died on April 27th 2022, at 11:42 pm, in her home in Concord, Massachusetts, with her husband Jim, son Evan, and dog Bodie at her side.
Trained as a physical anthropologist --Brown, Edinburgh, Harvard— taught briefly. Lifelong student of human variation; said to the admitting nurse: "where did you get that widow's peak?" University administrator for 40+ years: admissions & institutional research. The students were her clients and "serving them" was her mission. Her words. She was a numbers girl from beginning to end; a child who sat at the intersection stop light and wrote down license plate numbers because that was data and she knew instinctively that data were important. Survey research guru. Never met a survey she didn't take.
Passions: arts & crafts pottery, tiles, metalwork, fabrics, furniture, architecture; esthetic writing: Morris, Ruskin, Elbert Hubbard.
Dinosaurs: AMNH, loved all the top dinos, but stegosaurus was her totem; an improbable animal for an improbable life….
Music: Beatles, Chopin, Bach. Solo piano/cello her faves. Said Paul smiled when she and her bestie held up their sign "YOU'RE OUR CUPPA' " (Philadelphia Convention Hall 1964).
Irrationally loyal to friends: Support through every setback; encouraging with hope through their cancer. Independent, self-reliant, no filter; did not suffer fools.
Massive reader, the erudite to schlocky detectives and vampires.
Frugal to the absurd: coupons and dented cans. Generous with time & money to family, friends and causes.
No slave to fashion. Wore hobbit pants. Had the cutest little size 6 feet. Shopped kids' shoe section.
Scholar without pretense: watched 90 Day Fiancé, Married at First Sight, HGTV, and drank her red wine with ice.
Craftsperson/hobbyist: stone sculpting, mosaics, stained glass, furniture refinishing, metalwork (not so good).
World traveler. Never carried a camera. Saw the big 4 in Africa. All continents but the icy one. Returned bearing paintings, sculpture, recordings, food and spices and, always, chocolate for hubby.
More passions: oriental rugs, art museums, material culture, antique markets & shops, archeological and paleontological digs, knights & castles, Egyptology, Native American culture, indoor plants. Mayan culture and sites a specialty.
Cook of some renown; won best UMass Lowell staff chili competition 2008 for her "Fire in the Hole". Seamstress all her life. Filled closets in junior high and high school.
Cat lover turned dog lover by religious conversion. Swore by Dog.
Janet is beloved and survived by her husband of 48 years, Jim Bing (her Berkeley hippy fling), their son Evan Bing Sawyer, daughter-in-law Lisa Marie Reifke, grandchildren Finely Scout Sawyer, Emmett Bing Sawyer, Paxton Bing Sawyer. Her besties from junior high, Kathy D. & Helen W. and her bud from Brattle Street graduate housing, Nancy (NanNan) F., and traveling cousin Mary Sue.
