Jane Thankful Smith died of cancer on August 21, 2015 at her Lincoln home.
She was born to Violet and James Thoburn Smith on September 16, 1940 at Holyoke Hospital in Holyoke, Mass. She attended the Frederick Harris School and Forest Park High School in Springfield, Mass.
After a year at Searles High School in Great Barrington, MA, she entered Northfield School for Girls, now known as Northfield Mount Hermon, where she graduated with honors in June of 1958. In the fall, she entered Smith College in Northampton, MA where she majored in Religion and minored in English. She graduated from Smith in May of 1962.
Boston was her next home, where she worked as a secretary in both metallurgy and civil engineering. There, she met her husband to be and married in 1966. They lived in Wayland for thirty-two years. She attended Episcopal Divinity School and transferred to Boston College Graduate School of Social Work. Jane earned her M.S.W. in May of 1975. Her work thereafter centered on geriatric patients, mostly in nursing homes, all the while bringing her theological training into her practice of social work.
After many working years, she began to volunteer at nursing homes as a Lay Eucharistic Minister (LEMB), licensed by the Episcopal Diocese to bring consecrated elements to those unable to attend celebration of the Eucharist in church. In this capacity, Jane openly used her ministerial training for residents of nursing homes.
She leaves her cousins, Norval Smith, Robert Gardiner, Mary Benton, Philip Gardiner, Priscilla Greenwood, Richard and Paul Hinckley, and many dear, close friends.
Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, September 16th at 10 am in St. Anne's-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, 147 Concord Road, Lincoln. A reception will follow in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to Northfield Mount Hermon School, One Lamplighter Way, Gill, MA 01354.
