Obituary

Jan M. Klauzinski, age 81, of Medford, formerly of Marshfield, died quickly and peacefully after a hard-fought illness on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was born in Ostrowiec, Poland on February 11, 1936, the son of the late Antoni Klauzinski and Czeslawa Klauzinska (Brzoza). He grew up in Poland following World War II, living through both loss of family and opportunity for change. Out of a need for survival, Jan developed many skills early in life to support his family and overcome the devastation of war. As a young person, due to a scarcity of resources, Jan and his older brother were sent to a boarding school as a shelter home for boys where they would complete their education until adulthood. The shelter home was frequently a difficult life of strict discipline, farm work, shop work and school, instilling his deep values for work and providing him a broad education. Jan spent much of his time in the library, where he studied literature, history and grew his knowledge and love of America. Following his schooling, he apprenticed as a chef in a family-owned steak house, which further grew his lifelong skill and love for food, cooking and cultural cuisine. As a duty of citizenship, he then served in the polish navy aboard the Baltic; a research vessel bringing Poland into an international scientific project that lasted from July 1, 1957, to December 31, 1958 and marked the end of a long period during the Cold War. He arrived in New York City in 1960 and became a naturalized citizen. He married Antonina (Contino) in 1962 and they began their family together in New York and later in Maynard. A skilled Machinist, Jan was employed by American Machine and Foundry in New York and later at Clement Precision, Inc. in Maynard, MA, where he worked on components for NASA's Apollo 13 shuttle. Continuing to grow with a broad set of technical certifications, including an HVAC certification and many others, he operated in the role as Facilities Manager for Digital Equipment Corporation in Maynard for twenty years, which included managing their multiple locations, buildings and staff members. Jan resided in his oceanfront home in Marshfield for thirty-three years where he enjoyed daily three-mile walks and taking "dips" in the ocean, making friends along the way. Family and giving the gift of good food were at the center of his life. Cooking for others was his symbol for love, and something that brought him immense pride. A man of high intelligence, his life was a story of unrelenting survival whether it involved war, immigration, or cancer. He leaves behind his loving children, Rob Klauzinski and his wife Kimberly of Westwood, Maria Fryer and her husband Jeremy of Fredericksburg, VA, Anthony Klauzinski and his wife Alyssa Grinberg of Medford, and Joyce Klauzinski of Winchendon, his grandchildren, Robbie and Kristina Klauzinski and Nathaniel, Stefan, and Cora Fryer, his sister, Teresa Gilewska of Poland, the mother of his children, Antonina Klauzinski of Maynard, and several nieces and nephews. Jan was also the brother of the late Zigmunt and Stanley Klauzinski. Relatives and friends may attend visiting hours on Wednesday, June 14th from 4 to 8 pm in the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center. An additional period of visitation will begin on Thursday, June 15th at 8:45 am in the Dee Funeral Home, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 am in St. Joseph Church, 142 Lincoln Road, Lincoln.
