James H. Platt, 93, of Littleton and a longtime Concord resident, died Friday, May 11, 2012 at Concord Health Care Center. He was the beloved husband of sixty years to Barbara J. (Lauriat) Platt. Born in Cumberland, Rhode Island on September 19, 1918 he was the son of the late James and Edith (Fogg) Platt. He attended schools in Cumberland and graduated from Cumberland High School in 1936. He earned a bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from Brown University. During World War II, he served in the Army Signal Corps and was assigned to the Search Light Battalion in North London where he was schooled in the early development of the science of radar. For many years, prior to his retirement, Mr. Platt was employed as a Rocket Scientist at the Air Force Cambridge Research Center. He worked on Upper Air instrumentation, starting with the old German V2 rockets measuring the ionosphere for ozone, plasma, and radio waves. Mr. Platt's research was involved with putting fruit flies and monkeys into the stratosphere to test their adaptability to the cosmos which was the preliminary data needed to put a man on the moon He also designed components and equipment needed for specific space probes. A resident of Littleton for the past fourteen years, he previously was a longtime resident of Concord. During his retirement years he enjoyed sailing his Sandpiper up and down the New England coast, tending to his garden, sewing slipcovers and substitute teaching in the Concord School System. He was a member of the Trinitarian Congregational Church in Concord. In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by a daughter, Heidi Platt Gruskowski and her husband Dr. Craig Gruskowski of Littleton, 4 grandchildren, Sarah, Tabitha, Jill and Edward Gruskowski, all of Littleton. Concord's town flag was flown at half-staff on the day of Mr. Platt's burial in recognition of his Army service during World War II. Arrangements were under the care of Susan M. Dee and Charles W.
