Jim Phelps passed away on May 30, 2022 in Concord, MA at the age of 90 after several illnesses. He was born in Arlington, MA and graduated from Arlington High School in the class of 1949. He then worked at Shawmut Bank where he met his future wife, Ann Hughes. Next, he joined the U.S. Air Force, serving in Germany and North Africa. Upon returning from overseas, he completed undergraduate and MBA degrees at Northeastern University in Boston. He began his professional career as a draftsman at Sanborn Company, a medical instruments company which was acquired by Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 1961. Jim had an almost 30 year career at HP, working as an executive in Waltham and Andover, MA as well as at the company headquarters in Palo Alto, CA.
He was an avid golfer and loved walking the course while playing rounds and in tournaments at The Concord Country Club. Jim played regularly on Tuesdays with The Bogey Boys. He was a devoted Boston sports fan who especially loved the Patriots and the Red Sox. In earlier years, he enjoyed tennis and running as well as bowling, softball and dancing. In later years, Jim could be seen walking through his Concord neighborhood and chatting with those he encountered along the way. He remained a lifelong fan of poker, cribbage, crossword puzzles, and BBC television programs. Jim was also active in his community and in Concord town government. He served on the Board of Assessors, the Finance Committee, the Board of the Belknap House and was a poll worker for every election.
Jim is preceded in death by his mother, Jeannette Gass Barr; his brother, Richard; and his sister, Cynthia Bigley. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ann of Concord, MA; daughters Jennifer York (Charles) of Great Falls, VA and Janet Heywood (John) of Washington, DC; grandchildren Christina, Jessica, Anika and Dominic; as well as nephews Ryan and Sean Bigley. He was a beloved husband, father and grandpa who was devoted to his family and will be greatly missed. Jim was well known for his sense of humor, optimism, charm, and zest for life. He wanted to be remembered as someone who cared because he truly did.
A burial and celebration of Jim's life will be held this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to The Concord Council on Aging, 1276 Main Street, Concord, MA 01742.
