Obituary

James W. O'Toole, 91, a sixty-year resident of Belmont, died Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Emerson Hospital in Concord following a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary E. (McCann) O'Toole. Born in Boston on December 8, 1926, he was the son of the late James E. and Helen Gertrude (Scollard) O'Toole. He attended Boston public schools, Boston English High School and graduated in 1950 from Boston University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. During World War II, he served as a Staff Sergeant in the U. S. Army, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, stationed in the Philippines. For many years, prior to his retirement, Mr. O'Toole was employed as a Store Manager at Bed and Bath locations in Brighton and Woburn. Previously he worked in the credit departments of Jordan Marsh and Lerner Department Stores in downtown Boston and as a Manager at the Gilchrist Department Store in Waltham and at Colton's in Brookline. A resident of Belmont since 1955, he was a devoted communicant of Our Lady of Mercy Church in Belmont and more recently of Sacred Heart Church in Watertown. He was an avid walker, bicyclist and lifelong learner. He enjoyed reading the daily newspapers and tending a beautiful collection of Christmas Cacti that were nearly as old as he was. Survivors include his daughters, Elizabeth E. O'Toole and her husband Richard Prayson of Shaker Heights, Ohio and Mary P. O'Toole and her husband Domenic Mazzola of Concord, and his brother, John J. O'Toole of Belmont. He was also the proud grandfather of Brigid and Nicholas Prayson and Emily, Domenic and James Mazzola. He was an extraordinary Brother, Father, and Grandfather and delighted in spending time in the company of his family. He made each of us feel loved and valued and very special. He had a wonderfully positive attitude and looked forward to each day. His engaging smile and quick wit kept us laughing and his gentle ways and caring spirit made spending time with him a delight. He enjoyed the activities and interactions he had with his caregivers and fellow residents at the Rivercrest care facility in Concord where he lived during the past year. He will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Visiting hours will be held at the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center on Thursday, April 26th from 7-9pm. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00am on Friday morning April 27th at Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center. Burial will follow at Belmont Cemetery in Belmont, where officers of the U.S. Army will present military honors. Concord's town flag will fly at half-staff in recognition of Mr. O'Toole's service to his country during World War II. Contributions in his memory may be made to Homes for Our Troops 6 Main Street, Taunton, MA 02780 www.hfotusa.org. Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
