James Renfrew McColl, 70, longtime Concord resident, died Monday, November 22, 2010 at Emerson Hospital in Concord, after a valiant battle with pneumonia and lymphoma.He was the beloved husband of Mary Lou (Porter) McColl for forty-eight years.
Born in Albany, NY, Jim was the son of the late John F. and Dorothy (Claflin) McColl.He grew up in Delmar, NY and attended the University of Rochester, class of 1962.He received a Doctorate in Physics in 1967 from the University of California at Berkeley and was awarded a Post-Doctoral NATO Fellowship to Oxford University, England.
From 1976 until 1994, Mr. McColl was a research scientist at GTE Labs in Waltham, MA, where he earned thirteen patents for the company.Previously, he was an associate professor of physics at Yale University.
An avid runner, Jim was a member of the Concord Runners, and also enjoyed cross-country skiing, bicycling, cooking, traveling, and playing the recorder in various baroque musical groups in Concord.He was a Concord resident since 1976.
In 1994, he suffered a massive stroke.Despite this, Jim lived a brave and happy life.He continued to play his recorder (with his left hand only) and enjoy frequent visits with his grandchildren.He was completely addicted to Sudoku puzzles.
He bonded and touched the lives of everyone he met, no matter how briefly.His enthusiasm for life was an example to all, and he will always be missed.
In addition to his wife, Mary Lou, Jim was the fun-loving father of Sean Alan McColl (and his wife, Kim) of Arlington, VA; Julie Porter McKenna (and her husband, David) of Sudbury, MA; and Rachel McColl Vuolo (and her husband Anthony) of Sudbury, MA.Popeye was the devoted grandfather of Katelyn and Michael James McColl; Taylor, Matthew James, Amelia, and Sara McKenna; and Anthony, James and Lucy Vuolo.He was the brother of Anne Ormsbee of Montpelier, VT; Linda Gouws of Falmouth, ME; and Mary Poplawski of Vestal, NY.
Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, December 4that 10AM in the Holy Family Parish, 12 Monument Square, Concord Center.Burial will be in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord, immediately following the funeral service.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, December 3rdfrom 4 to 6:30 PM, at the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center.
