Obituary

James Edward Manson, 89, a Concord resident since 1952, died peacefully at home Tuesday October 22, 2013. He was the beloved husband of sixty-four years of Nancy (Richards) Manson. Born in Brooklyn, New York on August 23, 1924 he was the son of Harold James Manson and Isabelle (Ross) Manson. He graduated from Manuel Training Academy in Brooklyn, received a BS in Physics from M.I.T. in Cambridge in 1948, and later a Masters in Physics in 1951 from University of Cincinnati. A World War II Marine Corps veteran, Mr. Manson retired in 1975 after a twenty-five year career as a physicist at Hanscom Air Force Base, where he collaborated with other physicists and laboratories throughout the United States. He later became the founder, owner and operator of J.E. Manson Co. and White Pine Corporation, designing and marketing instrumentation used in physics research, retiring at age 72. He was regularly published in The Journal of Geophysical Research. Mr. Manson was an original resident of the Conantum neighborhood in Concord. In his 50's, he became active in competitive rowing and was a participant in seven Head of the Charles Regatta's on the Charles River. A sports car enthusiast, he bought a Lotus in his 70's, became a member of Lotus Owners Group, and took racing lessons with them at Watkins Glen Race Track in New York. In addition to his wife Nancy survivors include his daughter Priscilla (Manson) Burnett of Concord, his son Mark Davis Manson and his wife Susan of Portland, Oregon, eight grandchildren and six great-granddaughters. He was the brother of Virginia Frick of Vermont and Elizabeth Pyle Whitney of Weston and is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Mr. Manson was the father of the late Cynthia Ross Manson. Cemetery: Interment will be in the family burial plot in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord. Service: A private memorial service will be held.
