James W. Alexander, 80, formerly of Concord, of Littleton, retired Lieutenant, Concord Police Department, died Friday October 22, 2010 at Emerson Hospital in Concord. He was the beloved husband of Joyce (Callon) Alexander.
Born in Lawrence on June 2, 1930 he was the son of the late James A. Alexander and the late Theresa (Duffy) Alexander. He attended Concord public schools and was a 1949 graduate of Concord High School where he lettered in Varsity football, basketball and track. He was a member of Coach Bernie Megan's 1947 and 1948 CHS undefeated football teams. He later attended and played football at Boston University.
Mr. Alexander served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
After his military service, he returned to Concord and in 1954 began his 36 year career with the Concord Police Department. He retired as a Lieutenant in 1990 after also serving as a Detective and Juvenile Officer. He was a past president of the Massachusetts Juvenile Police Officers Association and the recipient of the Roland Kinlock Award for his service to the association.
An avid golfer, he was a member of the Maynard and Groton Country Clubs. He was also a member of the James J. Mansfield American Legion Post in Concord, and was a former coach for the Concord Pop Warner Youth Football league and Concord Middle School teams.
Throughout the years he enjoyed driving his motor home to several destinations, especially Canada and the sea shores.
He has been a resident of Littleton for the past ten years.
In addition to his wife Joyce, survivors include a daughter Donna-Jeanne Matthews of Clinton, two sons, James A. Alexander of Tyngsborough and Mark A. Alexander and his wife Sandra of Littleton, seven grandchildren, Joy, Kristine, Cynthia, James, Jessica, Mark and Jennifer, eight great grandchildren, a sister Shirley Foley of Oscoda, Michigan, two brothers, Edward Alexander of Haines City, Florida and Thomas Alexander of Lompac, California and many nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late Walter James Alexander and David Lee Alexander, father-in-law of the late James Matthews, grandfather of the late Richard J. Alexander and Walter J. Matthews, and brother of the late Muriel Hollenkamp and Ernie Alexander.
Funeral will be held Wed. Oct. 27th from the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center at 9 am followed by a funeral Mass in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center at 10 am.
Interment with military honors will follow in the family burial plot in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord.
Visiting hours at the Dee Funeral Home will be on Tuesday October 26th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
Concord's town flag will fly at half-staff on Wednesday in honor of Mr. Alexander's service to his country during the Korean Conflict.
