Obituary

Jacqueline D. Michael, 85, of Bedford, MA, died in her sleep on September 10, 2016, her birthday, in Bedford, MA. She suffered from Parkinson's disease for the last 20 years of her life. Jackie was born in Chicago, IL to Charles and Vivian (Paulson) Johnston on September 10, 1931. She grew up in Chicago, IL and Minneapolis, MN and moved to Massachusetts in the late 1950s. Jackie earned her B.A. from UMASS Boston, Summa cum laude, and her M.S.W. from Simmons School of Social Work in Boston. She studied German at the Goethe Institute in Boppard, Germany during the summer of 1973. Jackie was Lead Social Worker for Appleton Hall at McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA, and retired in 1990. She was a member of the First Parish in Bedford Unitarian Universalist Church in Bedford, MA for almost fifty years. An advocate for social justice, Jackie was active in the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s, the anti-Vietnam War movement in the 1970s, and many other social causes. Jackie was an accomplished actress. As a young wife and mother she was involved in several community theater groups. Her interest in the spoken word led her to organize poetry readings throughout her life. She had a lifelong passion for literature and the arts, and enjoyed attending plays, films, concerts, and art exhibits. An avid traveler, some of the countries she visited include Egypt, Germany, Iceland, China, and Ireland. She lived in Baghdad, Iraq from the fall of 1966 to June of 1967 when her first husband was working for the World Health Organization of the United Nations. Jackie and husband Irving attended the Nobel Prize Ceremony in Stockholm Sweden in 1997. Jackie is survived by her husband of 45 years, Irving Michael of Bedford, her children and their partners Heather Lenz and Paul Wanta, Kimberly Lenz and Bill Stubblefield, Regan Kleber and Alan Womer, and Otto and Natasha Lenz. She leaves grandchildren John Kleber, Otto Kleber and fiancé Amanda Marcotte, Monica Kleber, Dominic and Madeline Lenz, and great grandchildren Allison Deitner, Anthony Kleber, and Abigail Kleber. Jackie is survived by sisters Ronnae Garrity, Marea Sweeten, and Penny Johnston, and brothers Charles, Robert, and Christopher Johnston. Jackie was preceded in death by her first husband, Warren Jay Lenz in 1968. A memorial service for Jackie is planned for 1 pm on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist, 75 Great Road, Bedford. Memorial donations may be made to The Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018. Arrangements are under the care of the Dee Funeral Home of Concord.
