Obituary

Irene Bagdon Thompson of Fairhaven Hill, Concord, died peacefully on March 22, 2016, at home in Concord, MA, with family around her. She was born in Bridgeport, CT, on October 18, 1924, the daughter of Lithuanian parents. She attended the local public schools and graduated from Bassick High School in 1942. After graduation she worked as a secretary for Casco Products Corporation, and then joined Chance Vought Aircraft in Stratford, CT. It was there, in April of 1946, that she met her future husband, Henry. They were married in November of 1946. In 1948 they moved to Henry's home town of Concord, to live on Fairhaven Hill. There they started a family, and Irene became actively involved in the community. As well as managing her household including a husband and five children, she was a bookkeeper for the Concord Oil Company from 1969 until 1982. She was a committed volunteer for the Concord Public Library, and also the Emerson Hospital Auxiliary, of which she became a lifetime member. Irene was a long-time, faithful member of Holy Family Parish in Concord. Flowers and gardening were passions of Irene's, and she proved to have a green thumb with her own lovely gardens. She was a member for many years of the Concord Garden Club, serving as treasurer and helping with their sales. Irene especially enjoyed bridge and golf, both of which she played in a highly competitive fashion. She was an honorary member of the Concord Country Club, and played in many golf events, both at the state and Club level. Her golfing career included two holes-in-one. Irene and Henry took golfing trips to many parts of the world, including Ireland, England, Scotland, Spain, Morocco, Bermuda, Eleuthera, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Arizona, and Hawaii. Irene and Henry spent a full year in Tucson with their daughter Molly, while Molly was recuperating from a heart-lung transplant to address a congenital heart defect. Sadly, after struggling with complications, Molly passed away in December of 1995. Irene and Henry were with Molly continuously during this difficult year, and were devoted and caring parents. Irene was a proud grandmother to her five grandchildren, and enjoyed many happy family gatherings with them, including rounds of golf and family vacations. She is survived by her devoted husband of 69 years, Henry S. Thompson; her son, Paul Thompson and his wife Leticia, of Houston, TX; her daughter, Dorothy Thompson Griffin and her husband Bruce Griffin, of Amherst, MA; her son, John Thompson and his wife Denise, of Concord, MA; her son, Robert Thompson, of Martinez, CA; five grandchildren, Sam and Julia Griffin, Alexander, Stephanie, and Madison Thompson; and her brother, Walter Bagdon, of Westport, CT. Irene will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
