Obituary

Hope Elizabeth Mallar Clark was born on July 14, 1926 in Lynn, Massachusetts. She died quietly on Tuesday morning, November 19, 2024. She was the beloved wife of George Everett Clark. She was the loving mother of Linda Clark and husband, Pete Mierswa of Sterling, the late Daniel Clark and surviving wife Sheila of Rowley, and Thomas Clark and wife Patricia of Amesbury. Grandmother of Sharon Hebenstreit and husband Anthony Radzicki, Peter Hebenstreit and wife Shan-Wei Ko of Milford, NH, and Hannah Clark of Salem. Survived by sister-in-law Marion Clark at 103 years old.

She is predeceased by her parents Nathan Herbert Mallar and Ruth Evelyn Whitaker Mallar. Also her brother Richard L. Mallar and his wife Rita of Rockland, and brother John L. Mallar, survived by his wife Dorothy of Florida. Many nieces and nephews, neighborhood kids, and former patients were all loved by her.

Hope graduated from Saugus High School in 1943. She studied nursing at Salem Hospital School of Nursing. While a student, she served as a Cadet nurse at Danvers State Hospital. Hope worked as an LPN at Saugus General Hospital part-time while raising her family. She earned an Associate Degree in Nursing at North Shore Community College and became an RN. After she left the hospital, Hope worked as a surgical assistant for many years for Dr. Donald Perlman, Chief of Surgery at Lynn and Union Hospitals. She made many close friends while she worked as an OR nurse at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital until she retired.

A seamstress, Hope loved making clothing, from school clothes, dance costumes, doll clothes and gowns. She made beautiful quilts, pillows, and decorations for all of us. The teddy bears she made are well stuffed with love! She also knit for all her children and grandchildren. She loved making crafts for family, friends, or craft fairs. She studied making jewelry for a while and restrung beads and created original silver pieces and rings. But she always said she wasn't creative.

Hope loved growing flowers, especially sweet peas, dahlias, and gardenias. She even made preserves, and taught us how. She was a "homemaker" who welcomed many guests and always wanted to give more.

Hope and George enjoyed visiting art galleries and museums. They loved watching birds, and they had several dogs, cats, and a parakeet as pets. Lynn and Nahant Beaches were close by for picnics and swimming. They were involved in kids sports including swimming, little league, and skiing as well as Scouts.

They demonstrated that hard work was needed to afford to go on vacations and travel. The family traveled throughout the US and Canada by car and tent camping in many National Parks and campgrounds: East coast from Florida to Nova Scotia and PEI, the Midwest, Southwest and Rocky Mountains, Great Lakes and Ontario. Navy reunions were attended at different cities including Boston, Nashville, Charleston. Short trips to N.H. and Maine including Bar Harbor and Jonesport as well as the Berkshires. They traveled to Morocco, Europe, North Africa as well as many Caribbean islands. They enjoyed their cruises to Greece and the Panama Canal, Ireland, and Alaska.

Hope was active in church groups: St. John's in Saugus, MA, and St. Mark's in Safety Harbor, FL. Hope loved big band jazz, Dixieland, and classical music. She and George loved attending the music programs where they lived: North Shore Philharmonic Orchestra, St. Mark Village in Florida as well as Center Harbor and Townsend Band concerts.

After they became full time Florida residents, they enjoyed summers at Diamond View Associates in Gilford, NH, on Lake Winnipesaukee.

We were able to bring Hope and George back to MA in January, 2022 where they have been residents of The Gardens at Newbury Court, in Concord, MA.

"Hope was a caring, strong and spirited woman throughout her life -- always comfortable being in control of things -- but her actions were always filled with compassion and she shared her love freely. She and her husband, George, made for a dynamic duo in The Gardens and the two of them proved that love endures no matter the challenges. Every day they were together, they cared for each other with humor, with spunk, and in the end, with tenderness" ~ Annette Nicolas, Associate Chaplain

Hope instilled in all of her children and grandchildren a joy in craftsmanship and completing projects, being accountable while sharing her sense of humor.

Hope had let us know she was ready, and said her goodbyes. We will all help George to carry on.

Donations to "Care Dimensions" Hospice/Palliative Care/Support Service would be welcomed.

Arrangements are entrusted to Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
