Helen B. (Newman) Spillert, 98, of Waltham, entered into rest on February 2. She was the wife for 61 years of the late Gilbert Spillert, who died in 2008.
Born in 1919, Helen was raised in the Bronx, NY, and attended Hunter College. She received a degree in chemistry in 1940, unusual for young women of that time. Before the war she worked as a lab technician in New York for Dr. Ochoa, later a Nobel laureate. During World War II, she was employed by the US Army Signal Corp, inspecting radios to be used by the troops overseas. After the war her adventurous nature led her and a friend to travel to Mexico, and also hitchhike around New England. She married Gilbert in 1947 and they eventually settled in Waltham, where they raised two sons.
Gilbert and Helen traveled the world during their marriage. Their travels included Europe, Greece, Israel, Mexico, Hong Kong, Thailand, many cruises, and other destinations. When the boys went off to summer camp Gil and Helen went to Switzerland.
Helen was loved by everyone she met for her kind, gentle demeanor and glowing smile. She will be greatly missed by her family.
She is survived by two sons, Alan Spillert and his wife, Janet, of Brookline, and Edward Spillert and his wife, Amy, of Beverly, her grandchildren Scott, and Bradley, Pamela, Sarita and her husband, Virgil Neely, and her great granddaughter Skylar.
Her funeral service will be held on Monday, February 5th at 11:30 am at Kerem Shalom, 659 Elm St., Concord. Burial will follow at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord. Following the burial, shiva will be at her home, 56 Mallard Way, Waltham, from 6 to 8 PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 309 Waverly Oaks Rd., Waltham, MA 02452 (www.alz.org).
Arrangements are under the care of the Dee Funeral Home of Concord.
