Obituary

Henry "Harry" Beyer, 84, died at home Tuesday, Nov. 8. Harry was born in Pittsburgh, PA the son of Henry and Kathryn Niland Beyer. He is survived by his wife, Janet (Condrey), and their sons, wives and children: David, Ngoc, Adrian and Alana of Los Altos Hills, California; Stephen, Sue, Jessie, Angie and Tina of Chelmsford; Joseph, Julie, Ben and Cy of Concord; Daniel, Kathy and Jacob of Los Altos, California; and Robert, Jennifer, Kayla and Hailey of Concord. He is also survived by his brother Daniel, sister Kathleen and many nieces, nephews and cousins in Pittsburgh. After graduating with a degree in physics from Duquesne University in 1954 he was sent to El Paso, Texas as an Army Lieutenant. He met Janet there where she was teaching in a mission school. They married in 1959 and lived for six years in Maryland where he worked as an engineer. In 1966 they moved to Concord with their five sons. Harry left engineering and got a degree from Harvard Law School. He specialized in disability law and became director of the Center for Law and Health Sciences at Boston University. He loved Concord and was pleasantly surprised at how many ways he could be involved in a small town. He was a founding member of the Concord Interfaith Peace Conference. He served on the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail Advisory Committee, the Hugh Cargill Trust Committee, the 2004 Open Space Task Force and was a Director of The Friends of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. He was an original member of the Concord Trails Committee and a Concord Town Guide. He and some friends walked the 200-mile Bay Circuit Trail over a period of several years. Among his treks he hiked the Grand Canyon six times, once a 10-day solo hike. With friends and sons he climbed Mt. Whitney, the Trinity Alps and did a number of treks up Mt. Washington. A fan of Tony Hillerman he explored Canyon de Chelly and surrounding territory. He had no use for the ocean and on a trip to a campground on Tortola his beach chair faced the hills and trees. On the day he died, David wrote the following tribute: "After hiking and mapping more trails, mountains, and canyons than any of us could keep up with; after a life-long love of learning and discovery, even starting as an engineer and returning to school for a law degree at 41; after dedicating his second career to advocacy for the physically and mentally challenged; after doing his best at raising his five sons toward making a positive difference in the world, and reminding us when we were stressed that our best was all we could do too; after providing a moral example that will be difficult for anyone to match; after 23 years of advising his prostate cancer that he wasn't done yet; after a lifetime of pride in his planning and punctuality, apparently even scheduling the best day for him to move on; and after living his life, since a young teenager, without having the gift of a Dad himself, his body, his tent for over 84 years, has finally packed it in. Although my brothers and I ventured out long ago to raise our own families, his ever-present spirit has continued to help guide us and give moral structure to our lives. May it continue to do so." Visiting hours will be held on Friday, December 9th from 4 to 7 pm in the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, Dec. 10, 11 a.m. in Holy Family Parish at St. Bernard's Church, Concord Center. Private burial was in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord. Concord's town flag will fly at half staff on Dec. 10th in recognition of Harry's service to his country during the Korean Conflict. In his memory and spirit please take a walk in the woods with friends.
