Obituary

Harriett Parrott Ritchie, aged 93, resident of Sudbury passed peacefully on March 16, 2017 at Rivercrest Nursing Home after a decades long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was the beloved wife for 65 years of the late Kenneth Lamson Ritchie who died in 2010. She was born on March 27, 1924 in Kansas City, MO as her parents drove to California in search of work but later grew up in Warren, Michigan. She attended Wayne State University where she studied commercial (fashion) illustration. Harriett met her husband, Kenneth Lamson Ritchie, at the Warren Post Office where she worked and he picked up his mail from his family in Pittsfield, MA. A resident of Sudbury since 1950, Harriett continued her artistic endeavors early on through the Sudbury Art Association in the company of other painters, Helen Flynn, Janet Hand and Loring Coleman. She was very involved in Sudbury Girl Scouting both as a leader and member of the Board for Bay Path Colonial Council and she wrote a history of Sudbury Girl Scouting. In the company of friends Dorothy Fredey (proprietor of Post Rd Studios opposite the Kaffestuga) and Eleanor Goulding Greenawalt, she painted elaborate tole trays using gold leaf. She was a docent at the Codman House in Lincoln for many years, proudly sporting carefully curated Victorian dresses and hats. More recently she was a docent at Sudbury's Hosmer House, a member of the Sudbury Historical Commission and Sudbury Historical Society. She designed of many of the Hosmer House cup plates for the Commission. Harriett found great joy in her perennial gardens and enjoyed painting lush florals in oil. Harriett is survived by her son Duncan Ritchie, daughter Rebecca Cutting and son-in-law John C. Cutting, and their children Alexander Ritchie, Carolee Van Couyghen, and Benjamin Cutting. She is also survived by her sister Jean Parrott Moeller and Jean's children, Andrea, Garre, Rick, Tim, Kathy, Lynn, Matt and Amy. Also by her niece, Kimberly DePew, eldest child of her younger brother Harley Raymond Parrott who predeceased her. Harriet is also survived by her sister-in-law Beatrice Ritchie Haartz Page and Bea's children Eric Haartz, Betz Haartz and Christopher Haartz. Memorial Service will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Harriett's name be made to the Hosmer House via the E.B. Hosmer Fund; c/o Sudbury Historical Commission; 299 Concord Road; Sudbury, MA 01776.
