Harriet Dinsmoor Parish, 91, of Concord, died on Thursday, September 15th. Harriet—or Dinnie, to those who knew her from childhood—was born and raised in Newton, MA, and earned a degree in Chemistry from Simmons College. She married Gene Parish on October 9, 1948, and they had 66 wonderful years together before his passing in 2014.
From the time of their marriage until 1952, Harriet worked as a science researcher, first in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where she helped set up a hospital lab to treat children with cancer, and then later at MIT and the Boston Eye and Ear Infirmary.
In 1952, Harriet and Gene moved to Concord. They were among the original residents of the Conantum development, and raised three children there. During that time, Harriet was active in a wide range of community services, including volunteering at the Trinitarian Congregational Church, leading a Girl Scout troop, and volunteering in the schools. In 1969, she began working at Concord Adult Education, which she enjoyed until retiring in 1984, after which she volunteered with the Greeley Foundation and the Concord Museum.
She is survived by her children: William Parish of Littleton; Anne Larsen, married to Richard, of Shelburne Falls; Thomas Parish, married to Stephanie, of Westford; and her four granddaughters: Dana Larsen of Santa Fe, NM; Jaimye Larsen of Shelburne Falls, MA; Eva Parish of New York, NY; and Charlotte Parish of Cambridge, MA.
Harriet's granddaughters were the joy of her life, and she did not miss a chance to tell everyone how beautiful, wonderful, and brilliant they were. She also loved spending time at their house in Popham Beach, Maine, where she would spend long, happy hours sitting on the deck and watching the ocean, the beach walkers, and the boats going by. It was also there that she had one particularly memorable summer, getting to watch one of her favorite actors, Paul Newman, during the filming of the movie Message in a Bottle, which took place just two houses away.
Harriet was blessed to have the support of many communities during her life. From her childhood in Newton she maintained several dear friends throughout her life. The Conantum community gave her many lifelong friends, as they helped each other navigate child-rearing and other life milestones. The TriCon Church gave her both spiritual support and another set of wonderful friends. Similarly, her work in the school system and volunteer organizations resulted in deeper and broader connections to the community. Then, after moving to Newbury Court with Gene in 2009, she had the opportunity to both continue existing friendships and to gain a set of new friends, whose caring concern and love supported her through her later years.
A celebration of Harriet's life will take place on Saturday, October 8th at 1:00 PM in the Trinitarian Congregational Church, 54 Walden Street, Concord Center.
Private burial beside her husband was held in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord.
