Harold W. Meehan of Carlisle died peacefully on February 24, 2015 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease. Harold was born September 27, 1930 , the youngest son of William C. and Myrna M. (Custance) of Lexington.
Harold attended Lexington Public Schools, and after a short stint as a long haul truck driver, began his work career for the family business, Custance Brothers Builders. From 1952-1954 , he served in the US army as a private second class driving heavy trucks in post-war Germany during the time of the Korean War. In 1954 he married Betty L Howe, his beloved wife of over 60 years. Their wedding was originally scheduled for September 11, 1954, however, due to Hurricane Edna, the wedding was postponed to the following day. Their wedding rings were engraved with the originally planned wedding date of September 11, 1954.
The Meehans spent their early married life in Bedford, where they welcomed two sons, Clifford B., currently of Edgartown, and Kurt P. , currently of Concord. In 1968, with the help of many friends the family built their home in Carlisle.
In 1971, Harold established his own painting contracting business specializing in the finest of residential and commercial finish-work. Harold W. Meehan and Sons was based in his hometown of Lexington. He enjoyed running his own business until he retired in 2007.
One of Lexington's many "honorary mayors" , Harold would often be seen driving around town with a honk of the horn, and always a smile and a wave.
Harold enjoyed spending time with his 2 granddaughters, from Martha's Vineyard who spent many vacations with their grandparents, and his 3 grandsons, who walked, biked, or skied through the woods to visit Grampy and Grammy.
Harold loved antique cars and trucks, was a member of The Antique Truck Historical Society and was always interested in attending antique auto shows. For the last 50 years, he owned a 1930 Model A which was recently restored by his oldest son. Harold was often seen in his green 1950 Chevrolet pick-up truck heading to or from Carlisle's social center, the transfer station. He enjoyed vacationing in Martha's Vineyard and on Nichols Pond in Vermont, but he most enjoyed being home in Carlisle with a dog and a grandchild or two in his lap.
In addition to his wife and sons, Harold leaves two daughters-in-law Mary Beth (Michalik) Meehan of Edgartown and Jacqueline (Walsh) Meehan of Concord; two granddaughters and their husbands: Jacqueline and Matt Millard, of California, and Kurstin and Dayce Moore, of Edgartown; three grandsons: William C., Thomas H. , and Donovan J, Meehan, all of Concord; and his sister Helen Millican of Peabody.
