Harold Thurston Handley Jr., 83, a Concord resident since 1959, died Friday June 3, 2016 in Concord. He was the beloved husband of Carolyn (Bacon) Handley. Born in Saugus on August 20, 1932 he was the son of the late Rev. Harold Thurston Handley and Dorothy Whiting Handley. He grew up in Lexington and attended Lexington schools. He later received a BS and MS in Horticulture and Floriculture at University of Massachusetts in Amherst. During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Austria from 1953 to 1954. Mr. Handley worked at the University of Massachusetts Cooperative Extension on Everett Street in Concord for over 30 years. He was a long time member of the Horticultural Club of Boston, serving as its Treasurer for over 25 years. In his retirement he worked as a gardener at the Timothy Wheeler House on Walden Street in Concord and in maintenance at the Girl Scout House, also on Walden Street in Concord. Throughout the years, neighbors and friends appreciated Thurston for his gardening advice and help. He served two terms on the Town of Concord Finance Committee and also on the Town's Cemetery Committee. He was also a proud charter member of The Friends of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. In addition to his wife Carolyn, survivors include his children, Elizabeth Horrell of NC, Joy Handley of WY, Mark Handley of AK and David Handley of ME, and his brother Eric Handley of ME. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Mr. Handley was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Harold Thurston Handley and Dorothy Whiting Handley and his brother Frederick Thomas Handley. A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 11th at 2 PM in Church of Our Redeemer, 6 Meriam Street, Lexington, MA.
