Hans P. Steyskal, (our "Far"), 79, of Concord, died as a result of a tragic accident in Concord on Monday July 30, 2018. He was the loving husband of Helga (Egger) Steyskal for 54 years.
Hans was born in Berlin, Germany on October 10, 1938 to his late parents, Herbert and Leopoldine (Grill) Steyskal.
Hans had a rough start in life as a child of WWII, surviving the flames of Dresden, famine, and the war. In the aftermath, the family emigrated to Sweden, where he grew up and fell in love with mountaineering. It was a passion and outlook that would guide his life - always push yourself to the limit. This passion was not deterred when struck by lighting on the Eiger Northface. Instead it fueled bolder adventures. He scaled the Civetta, one of the most difficult in the Alps, but it wasn't high enough. He set his sights on the Andes where he ascended the mighty Huascaran at nearly 22,000 ft.
In his professional career he also pushed himself. He received a PHD in Electrical Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, and joined the Swedish National Defense Research Establishment, but wanted a bigger stage and moved with his family to the U.S. in 1980 to join the Air Force Research Laboratory, Antenna Technology Branch, Hanscom AFB, where he worked until retirement in 2007 with the title of Senior Scientist, the civilian equivalent rank of General. Always modest and humble, he truly enjoyed how the Air Force base guards snapped to attention just because a new high-ranking entry sticker had been put on his car.
Of course Hans didn't retire, he continued his work in electromagnetic, phased array antennas, and digital beamforming until his last days. His love for the outdoors did not retire either. Despite suffering a broken ankle on a climbing wall, a major ski accident, and mild Parkinson's, he continued to ski, bike, hike and sadly swim...
He loved his family, and was blessed with 2 grandchildren in 2011, who he adored, and we love you too "Far" - you will be dearly missed forever.
In addition to his wife, Hans leaves behind two children, Jorg Steyskal of Big Sky, Montana and Sandra Steyskal and her husband Edward Feltmann of Vienna, Austria, his grandchildren, Felix and Viggo Feltmann, and one sister, Christel Lyrholm. He was the brother of the late Herbert Steyskal.
Relatives and friends may attend his funeral Mass on Tuesday, August 7th at 2 pm in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to a school project in the Himalayas in Nepal, which the family has been supporting. A donation box will be at the reception and more info can be found at http://clapnepal.org/
