H. Irene (Mockel) Powers, 91, of Concord, passed away at the Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley in Littleton on September 28, 2016. She succumbed only after a valiant fight from complications following a stroke that she had suffered in January 2015. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard F. Powers, who died in 2003, after 54 years of marriage.
Born in NYC on June 29, 1925, Irene was the daughter of the late Edward B. Mockel and Kathryn May (Babcock) Mockel. Mrs. Powers resided in Arlington, Brighton, Burlington, Concord, West Dennis and Marlboro and leaves behind her devoted children; Patricia and her husband, John Selin, of Stow, Cynthia and her husband, Ray Frost, of Windsor, David Powers of Concord, Pamela and her husband, John Rodenhizer, of Fitchburg, daughter-in-law, Anne Powers of Maynard. She was predeceased by her son, Richard E. Powers in 2002, and her sister, June Mc Laughlin in 1981. Survivors also include her sister, Marlene Mockel, who resides in Malden and four dear grandchildren; Kimberley and her husband, Bryan Wood of Bristol, CT., Meredith and her husband, Joshua York of Ipswich, Christopher and his wife Amy Nghe of San Francisco, CA and Colleen Powers of Maynard. She is also survived by six beautiful great-grandchildren; Dylan, Brianna, Lily, Kaitlyn, Isabella and Lyra, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Irene graduated from Arlington High School, followed by the Burdett School of Business in Boston, and worked as an Administrative Assistant for several years before marrying her beloved Richard. A dedicated mother and consummate homemaker, Irene took great pride in her family and home. She volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program on the Cape and as a transport volunteer at the Emerson Hospital. She was a brilliant woman, excelling in history, literature and poetry and for several years her clever poems were regularly published in the Concord Journal under the pen name "Auntie Litter." Having never driven a car in her life, she enjoyed nature and the outdoors immensely and walked or rode her bicycle everywhere! And although small in stature she had a big heart, kind and thoughtful to all...
The family would like to take this opportunity to express sincere gratitude to the dedicated staff of The Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley. They took such excellent care of Irene during her stay - they are truly caring professionals.
