H. Alexander Porter, 84, of Sudbury, MA passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 12, 2015.
Born in Buffalo, N.Y. to Isobel Margaret Farncomb (Porter) and Alexander Langmuir Porter, Mr. Porter is survived by his wife Janet E. Porter, and by his former wife Susan Porter of Framingham. He is also survived by his children Kip Porter and her partner Nikki Pero, of Derry, N.H., Sandy Porter and his wife Heather of Littleton, N.H. and his stepchildren, Bill Calhoun and wife Linh of Chapel Hill, N.C. and Amy Capofreddi and her husband Matt of Concord, MA, and eight (8) grandchildren, Grace and Emily Capofreddi, Audrey and Ben Calhoun, Lindsey and Will Porter, Zach and Cam Porter. He also survived by his sister Peggy Steele Moore of Honolulu.
We celebrate the life of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. An avid and adventurous outdoorsman with a life long interest in bird shooting and fly fishing, he lived life fully and with passion. He also had a loved painting wildlife and landscapes pictures. He loved being surrounded by family and friends. He had a particular love of quiet waterways, enjoying spending time along the Sudbury River, on Grenadier Island in Lake Ontario or fishing along Merrymeeting Bay in Bowdoinham, ME.
He lived a full life, spending his early years hunting and fishing in Niagara Falls, NY. He attended Ridley College in St. Catharines, Ontario before continuing on and graduating from Williams College with a B.A. in 1952. He then joined the U.S. Army in 1952 and continued on until 1955. Commissioned 2nd Lt. at Ft. Benning O.C.S. Tank Gunnery Instructor at Ft. Knox.
Upon honorable discharge from the Army, Alec pursued a career in sales, finding a natural home in 1975 at the Stuart Hurlbert Company, an importer and distributor of Jute and Flax product. A natural salesman and leader, Alec purchased the company in 1983 and assumed the role of president until he sold to an employee and friend in 2004.
A memorial celebration will be held on Monday October 12, 2015 at 11 A.M. at Nashawtuc Country Club, 1861 Sudbury Road, Concord, followed by a reception at the Club.
