H. Roderick Nordell, 91, of Concord, formerly of Cambridge, died on Friday, April 14, 2017 at his Newbury Court residence. He was the loving husband for 62 years of Joan (Projansky) Nordell.
He was born in Alexandria, Minnesota on June 26, 1925, the son of the late Wilbur and Amelia (Jasperson) Nordell.
In 1948, he joined the Christian Science Monitor as a copy boy after serving in the Marine Corps during World War II and attending Harvard College.
He retired in 1993 as Executive Editor of World Monitor: The Christian Science Monitor Monthly. In between, he was a staff writer, jazz and theater critic, Home Forum editor, and feature editor. He also traveled to Dublin on a Rotary Foundation fellowship.
Rod Nordell and Friends, his swing jazz band, played gigs in the Boston area and beyond. A patron of the arts, he sat on the board of numerous arts organizations, including corporation chair of the Community Music Center of Boston and trustee emeritus of The Berklee College of Music. Rod was the Harvard Class of 1946 Secretary. His papers are in the Harvard Theatre Collection. Green before it was cool, he commuted via bike from Cambridge to Boston for many years.
Roderick and Joan lived in Cambridge for 50 years before moving to Concord, Mass. in 2013.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Eric (married to Anne), John (married to Betsy) and Elizabeth (married to Rudy Perrault) along with four grandchildren, Ella, Popo, Meredith and Andrew.
A celebration of his life will be held on October 21, 2017 at 3 pm in Memorial Church, Harvard Yard, Cambridge.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the charity of one's choice, or the Harvard Theatre Collection at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA 02138, or to the Community Music Center of Boston, 34 Warren Ave., Boston, MA 02116.
Arrangements are under the care of the Dee Funeral Home of Concord.
