Obituary

H. Madeline (Gillice) Johnson, 86, formerly of Glen Ridge & Essex Fells, New Jersey died peacefully after a very brief illness on December 6th at Lahey Hospital in Burlington, MA. She moved to Carlisle,MA in April 2012 to be closer to her family. Madeline was born in New York City on December 23, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Hulda Riker and Edward Gillice and was raised in a brownstone off the Grand Concourse in the Bronx. Her family summered at Lake Katonah in Westchester County, New York. She attended Evander Childs High School before attending Limestone College in South Carolina. She graduated in 3 years in 1946 and returned to New York City where her first position was in the Editorial Department of Houghton Mifflin. She met the love of her life at 16 and later married William Robert Johnson on June 17, 1950. Madeline returned to graduate school to obtain a teaching Degree from Montclair State College. Madeline was a theater enthusiast and would regularly go to Broadway shows with friends. She acted in college and was an actress and a director for many local plays in New Jersey. Madeline was passionate about family, friends and her faith. She was an avid reader and accomplished bridge player but it was her involvement with The Roseland Presbyterian Church which provided her the greatest of joy. She served for over 50 years as the Church Secretary as well as being an Elder and Youth Educator. Her consistent presence as secretary provided an invaluable source of judgement and guidance to the membership and ministry of the church. Madeline is survived by a son and a daughter. Douglas Johnson and his wife, Nancy Caudle Johnson of Camden, Maine, and Laura Schofield and her husband Rob Schofield of Carlisle, Mass. Madeline has 4 grandchildren and their spouses whom she absolutely adored ~ Ehrin Armstrong and his wife April of Sacramento, California; Adam Johnson and his wife Jennifer of Denver, Colorado, Ben and Emma Schofield of Carlisle, and two great grandchildren, Lucas and Adeline Johnson. Madeline is predeceased by her husband Bob who died of cancer at the age of 45 in 1971. A Memorial Service will be held in Roseland, New Jersey at her beloved Roseland Presbyterian Church on Saturday, December 15th at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Madeline may be directed to the Roseland Presbyterian Church ~Memorial Fund, 40 Freeman Street, Roseland, New Jersey 07068. Service: A Memorial Service will be held in Roseland, New Jersey at her beloved Roseland Presbyterian Church on Saturday, December 15th at 2:00.
