Obituary

Gloria Ison McCarthy, of Lincoln, formerly of Concord, MA and Westtown, PA died Monday, April 23, 2018 at her home in The Commons at Lincoln. She was the beloved wife for 65 years of the late Raymond L. McCarthy. Born in New York City on March 18, 1924 she was the daughter of the late Harry and Stella Ison of Forest Hills, NY. She attended Dominican Academy and graduated from the Sacred Heart Academy in Manhattan in 1940. In 1943, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Manhattanville College. She and Ray were married on September 11th 1943 and spent the war years in Washington, DC before moving to New Haven, CT where Ray completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Physics at Yale University. Ray and Gloria settled in Westtown, PA in 1952. In 1969, Gloria began her professional career in West Chester, PA in as an elementary school teacher in the West Chester public schools where she taught kindergarten and developed the first science education program for gifted children. She retired in 1985 and dedicated her life to her children, grandchildren and many volunteer activities. A longtime resident of Westtown, PA, she was an enthusiastic foxhunter, runner, skier, gardener, and caretaker for many animal companions. She and Ray moved to West Concord, MA in 2000 to be close to their beloved grandchildren. After Ray's passing in 2008, Gloria moved to The Commons in Lincoln in 2015. Survivors include her children Kevin R. McCarthy of Park City, UT, Sharon M. McCarthy of Harvard, MA, and Maureen I. McCarthy of Lake Tahoe, NV, her grandchildren, Lindsay M. Ware of Harvard, MA, Alison M. Ware of New York City, and Patrick R. Ware of Berkley, CA. Gloria was also the mother of the late Raymond L. McCarthy, Jr. who died in 1968. A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, May 1st at 10am in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord. Burial will be in Pennsylvania at a later date.
