Obituary

Gertrude Ford "Gertie" Cutler passed away on October 22, 2021 at the age of 90 in her hometown of Concord, Mass. She was a caring (but no-nonsense) mother, grandmother and friend. She was born in Chicago in 1931 to Burdette and Lillian Ford. She spent her early years in Grosse Pointe, Michigan and then went on to graduate from Wellesley College in 1952 with a B.A. in Economics and was very athletic, competing in both field hockey and basketball. After graduation she embarked on a two month trip through Europe where she met her future husband Sam. They married in December 1952, settled in Concord, and were together for 54 years until his death in 2006. Gertie was a trailblazer in every sense of the word. While raising four children, she started a successful local retail business with a friend, was the first woman president of the Concord Country Club, served on the board of the Middlesex Savings Bank and was the President of the Women's Golf Association of Massachusetts. She loved travel and the outdoors and was completely at home camping, sailing, hiking or canoeing on Martha's Vineyard or anywhere else. At one point, she and her late husband Sam Cutler led her children on a two-month camping expedition across all of Europe, exposing/dragging them to as much history and culture as possible. In her seventies, she took her grandson Sam on a 5-day wilderness canoe trip in Northern Minnesota. She was also an accomplished paddle tennis player and was known for "the Gertie" - an at-net drop shot on a severe angle. But her true passion was golf, which she continued to play until well into her 80s. She won the women's championship at the Concord Country Club 15 times (5 more than her closest competitor – her daughter Sue) and was an expert on the Rules of Golf, serving as an on-course official at national USWGA tournaments. She is survived by her four children – Mike Cutler (Laura), Andy Cutler (Liz), Marty Fuller (Whit) and Susie Beyer (Steve), her 10 grandchildren – Sam, Sasha and Max Cutler, Maggie and Ian Cutler, Curt and Madeline Fuller and Jessie, Angie and Tina Beyer, and her great grandson - Teddy Cutler. A Memorial Service will be held in the Spring to celebrate her life. Gertie was laid to rest during a private burial service at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord.
