Obituary

Gerald P. O'Neil, better known as "Gerry", age 93, the former Raytheon Director of Security and Concord resident, died Sunday, March 20th at the Care One Center of Concord following a brief illness. Born on June 15, 1922, Gerry was raised in Fall River, Massachusetts, the son of Jeremiah and Winifred (Magill) O'Neil. He was the oldest of five siblings and preceded in death by his parents, brothers Paul and Stephen, sister, Claire Leetch, his wife S. Elizabeth (Garrity) O'Neil and his beloved partner of twenty-nine years, Jean Phillips Kelly. Gerry was a graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and served in the Pacific Theater near the end of World War II. For over twenty-five years, he worked for the Raytheon Company in a variety of positions, and retired as Director of Security. In his retirement years, Gerry enjoyed extensive travel abroad with Jean. A longtime Concord resident, he was a familiar face within the Catholic Community and was a faithful parishioner at Holy Family Parish in Concord. Gerry had a passion for education, and felt it was key to unlocking one's ambitions and desires. He also believed that through hard work and education, nothing was impossible. In recent years, he mentored English Language Learners in the Cambridge Public School system, taught literacy at MCI Concord, pitched in to provide meals at a local food pantry, delivered for Meals on Wheels, and volunteered with the Friends in Service Helping (FISH), providing transportation to other senior citizens. Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Baker of Concord, his sons, Stephen P. O'Neil and his wife Nancy of Westford, and Mark D. O'Neil and his wife Sally of Sudbury, his grandchildren, Amy, Amanda, Lance, and Kyle, five great grandchildren, and his brother, Donald O'Neil of Oakdale, IL. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 2nd at 11 am in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center. Officers of the United States Navy will present military honors following the Mass. Interment will be private.
