George P. Theofilos, 82, of Westford, formerly of Wayland and summered in Newbury, Vermont, died Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Lowell General Hospital. He was the beloved husband for 60 years of Louise E. (Trey) Theofilos.
Born in Boston on July 25, 1934, he was the son of the late Paul Theofilos and Margaret (Denaro) Leone. He attended Concord and Boston public schools, graduated from Newman Preparatory School and graduated from the University of Massachusetts with degrees in both Math and Physics.
During the Korean Conflict he served as a Sergeant First Class in the U. S. Air Force under General Curtis LeMay, stationed at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida.
His career as an electrical engineer and physicist included working at Avco-Everett Research Lab in Everett, Massachusetts where he was the head project manager for the Missile Systems Re-entry Project; Rocketdyne (JPL) in California where he worked on the J2 Rocket; and Hamilton Standard in Connecticut where he was responsible for the transducer on the Portable Life Support System for Apollo 11 for Neil Armstrong's Moon walk. He retired from Stone and Webster in Boston as a Principal Engineer working on nuclear power plants.
George had a great love for science, the beach and the outdoors. He was an avid reader, a great card and chess player, and his greatest love and pride was for his family and friends, where he was always a warm addition to every gathering.
In addition to his wife, Louise, he is survived by his four children, Anne Mallett and her husband Rick and children, Dustin and Adam Leonhardt and Travis Mallett of Colorado, Paul Theofilos and his wife Ann of Methuen, Joan Vaccaro and her husband David and children Sean and Kyle of Westborough and James Theofilos and his wife Paula and children Harrison and Sydney Banks of Raymond, ME. He was also the great grandfather of Cayla, Bryson, Olivia and Eli, brother of Angie Flannery of Maynard and leaves behind many other extended family and friends.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, Feb. 6th from 4 to 8 pm in the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord.
Funeral will be held on Tuesday Feb. 7th at 9 am from the Dee Funeral Home followed by a funeral Mass in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord at 10 am.
Burial will follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord, where Fr. Gomes will read the committal prayers and officers of the U. S. Air Force will present military honors.
Concord's town flag will fly at half-staff on Tuesday in recognition of his service in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
