Obituary

George A. Coleman, 96, of Concord and Scituate, formerly of Waltham, long time Waltham Real Estate Broker, died Wednesday October 6, 2010 in Concord. He was the beloved husband of 56 years of the late Agnes Z. (Walsh) Coleman who died in 2002. Born in Waltham on January 26, 1914 he was the son of the late Martin and Elizabeth (McCaul) Coleman. He attended Waltham schools, St. Mary's High School and was a 1932 graduate of Waltham High School. He later attended Boston University. In 1933, he joined his father in the family owned and operated Coleman Real Estate Co., later known as Coleman and Sons Real Estate. He retired at age 70 after 51 years in Real Estate, serving the Greater Waltham area. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant in the weather corps stationed in the China, India, Burma theatre. On his return to Waltham, he built many homes in Waltham for returning veterans. He was the former President of the Brokers Institute of the Greater Boston Real Estate Board and a well known Realtor. Mr. Coleman was a recent recipient of a meritorious service award from St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Mary's Chapter of Waltham, for his 50 years of service and support. He was a member of the Waltham and Concord Knights of Columbus, was a former chairman of the Concord Housing Authority, was a Lord of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher, a former active parishioner of St. Bernard's Church in Concord, a founding member of Massachusetts Citizens for Life and a former member of the Hatherly Country Club in Scituate. He also was an original resident of Newbury Court in Concord. Survivors include his children, Robert Coleman and his wife Kathryn of Waltham, M. Julie Coleman-Burns and her husband Stephen of Scituate, George A. Coleman Jr. and his wife Kathleen of Lincoln, Helen Cushman and her husband Kevin of Danvers, Philip Coleman and his wife Charla of Lexington and Joseph Coleman of Lexington, 18 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and was the devoted brother of Helen Coleman Stanton of Needham and Martin J. Coleman Jr. of Wayland. He was also the grandfather of the late Timothy Coleman and brother of the late Elizabeth Tully of Albany, NY and Robert Coleman of Waltham. Funeral will be held Monday October 11th from the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center at 9 am followed by a funeral Mass in St. Bernard's Church at Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord at 10 am. Interment will follow in the family burial plot in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord. Visiting hours at the Dee Funeral Home will be held on Sunday October 10th from 2 to 6 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Coleman's memory may be made to Greater Waltham Association of Retarded Citizens, 56 Chestnut Street, Waltham, MA 02453 or to St. Vincent de Paul Society, 133 School St., Waltham, MA 02451.
