IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gail Robertson
Gilbert
September 12, 1936 – January 22, 2025
Gail Gilbert, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully from Alzheimer's disease on January 22, 2025, in Wayland, Massachusetts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Irving Gilbert.
Gail was born on September 12th, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois to Eleanor and Wayman Robertson, then moved to Woodstock, Illinois at the age of five. After graduating from Woodstock Community High School in 1954, she traveled west to attend the University of Southern California, earning a bachelor's degree in art history. It was at USC that Gail met her husband, Richard Irving Gilbert, a recent US Air Force veteran.
Gail and Richard settled in Berkeley, California and eventually, San Francisco, raising a family in the face of Richard's untimely death at age 46 to cancer. As a docent at M.H. de Young Museum, Gail had the opportunity to contribute to a 1973 book of her favorite artist, 'The Art of Andrew Wyeth'. Her parents relocated to Berkeley where she was involved in their growing antique dealing business, specializing in American Folk Art, which she treasured as a subject matter expert. At the outset of the 1980s, Gail became immersed in the visual arts, namely photography, attending the Academy of Art University, San Francisco. Her main interests were street photography, landscapes and still life. Upon later travels to Japan, she began practicing the art of Sumi-e black ink painting, exhibiting some of her works. Like her husband, Gail was also a driving enthusiast, owning a vintage Porsche that she spiritedly piloted around San Francisco's daunting hills. As a prominent part of her life, Gail pursued spiritual studies, attending the San Francisco Zen Center and the San Francisco Theological Seminary. Relocating to Marin County in 1987, then Point Richmond, California in 1992, she especially cherished the Point Reyes seashore and Stinson Beach areas where she frequented. In 2016, she moved east to Wayland, Massachusetts.
Gail is survived by her son, Scott Gilbert; son and spouse, Brian and Polly Gilbert; her granddaughter Emily Gilbert, grandson Jake Gilbert; her twin brother, Carl Robertson; her brother, preceded in death, Wayman Robertson; her cousin, Doris Simpson.
