Obituary

G. Sherman Blair, Jr., Attorney, Clerk Magistrate Brighton District Court, died Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Emerson Hospital in Concord. Born in Concord on March 28, 1926 he was the son of the late G. Sherman and Beulah F. (Jones) Blair. He attended Concord schools and graduated from Concord High School in 1944. In 1948, he received an A. B. Degree from Tufts University and in 1952 received an LL.B. Degree from Northeastern University School of Law. Attorney Blair practiced law in Concord beginning in 1954 and continued until his appointment in 1974 by Gov. Francis Sargent to the Brighton District Court as Clerk-Magistrate. He retired from that position in 1993. Previously, from 1966 until 1967, he served as the First Assistant Clerk of the District Court of Central Middlesex. A lifelong interest in Politics, he was Secretary to the Honorable Sumner G. Whittier, Lt. Gov. of Massachusetts until November of 1954. He was a member of the Massachusetts Republican State Committee and chairman of it's executive committee, a member and former chairman of the Concord Republican Town Committee, served on President Nixon's Inaugural Committee in 1969, was a member of the Harpooners Club, and was a special assistant to United States Congressman F. Bradford Morse. He also had a life-long interest, along with his children, in automobiles and collecting automobile sales brochures, attending car collecting shows across the area and had a particular love of Lincoln Continentals. He was also a member of the Antique Automobile Club of America, the Auto Enthusiasts International, Milestone Car Society, Lincoln Continental Owners Club and the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Classic Car Club. A lifelong Concord resident, he served the Town of Concord as a member and chairman of the Board of the Public Works Commissioners of Concord from 1951 until 1968. He was a former longtime Corporator of the Middlesex Institute for Savings in Concord, a former member of the Concord Chamber of Commerce and served for several years as chairman of it's Legislative Committee, a former member of the Massachusetts Civic League, was a volunteer for the Concord Community Chest, was an Emerson Hospital Building Fund Chair member, a member and secretary of the Men's Club of the Trinitarian Congregational Church in Concord, a member of the Concord Lions Club, a member of the Concord Country Club, a member and former Treasurer of the Concord Boy Scouts Sponsors where he received two leadership awards for his work in Boy Scout Activities. He was also a member of the Middlesex County Bar Association, Boston Bar Association, and the Massachusetts Bar Association. He is survived by two sons, Donald S. Blair and Jeffrey R. Blair of Concord. He was also the father of the late William Laurence Blair who died in 1995 and his former wife, Eileen J. (Derbyshire) Blair who died in 1996.
