Obituary

Mrs. Fumiko Masubuchi (Kaneno), 92, of Concord, formerly of Arlington, died Saturday May 19, 2018, in Concord. She was the beloved wife of 67 years of the late Koichi Masubuchi, Professor Emeritus at M.I.T. in Cambridge, MA, who died in 2016. Born in Tokyo, Japan, on September 12, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Shiro and Moto Kaneno. She attended schools in Japan and received a B.A. in Mathematics from Tokyo Women's Christian University. She was a math teacher at a women's high school in Japan. The couple met in Tokyo. They were married in 1949 and later came to the United States in 1963. They were forty-year residents of Arlington prior to moving to Newbury Court in Concord in 2013. Both made significant contributions and were actively involved in the Japanese community in Greater Boston. Fumiko served as Vice President of the Japanese Association of Greater Boston and led the Women's group of the association. Fumiko taught the art of Japanese flower arrangement, known as Ikebana. She held RIJI, the highest teaching degree of Sogetsu, a school of Japanese floral arranging. She was one of the founders of both the Sogetsu Massachusetts Branch and the Ikebana International Boston Chapter. She served as the Director of the Massachusetts Sogetsu for over 30 years. She was the sister of Hideko Abe in Japan and the late sister of Yoshiko Inui and late brother of Hiroshi Kaneno. She is also survived by the nieces of Yoko Inui, Yuko Kaneno, Kiyoko Suzuki, and the nephews of Isao Kaneno and Makoto Abe. Visiting hours will be held on Monday June 4th from 9 am to 11am followed by a gathering at 11 am in the Farrar Chapel of the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center. Interment will follow the gathering in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord. Donations in her memory may be made to the Masubuchi Fund, c/o Japanese Language School of Greater Boston Masubuchi Fund, 792 Mass.
