Obituary

Frederick T. Van Veen, 87, of Kennebunkport, ME, formerly of Concord, MA died peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday August 18, 2017 at The Commons in Lincoln, MA. He was the beloved husband of 54 years of the late Julia (Walsh) Van Veen. Born in Boston on May 29, 1930, he was the son of the late Frederick and Mary (O'Shea) Van Veen. He grew up in Dorchester, attended parochial schools there, graduated from Boston College High School in 1947 and later received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Boston College in 1951. Mr. Van Veen served as an officer in the Army National Guard for six years during the 1950's and also taught Algebra for a short time at Boston College High School. Fred's career in technology spanned 40 years. His first 13 years, beginning in 1955, were spent with General Radio in West Concord as a Technical Writer. His final 27 years were spent with Teradyne in Boston, where he retired in 1996 as Vice President of Corporate Relations. His professional affiliations included serving as an executive with the Massachusetts High Tech Council and also with the SEMI organization. A resident of Concord from 1964 to 1996, he served on the town's Planning Board and Finance Committee. Since 1996 he has resided in Kennebunkport, Maine and was a former member of the Zoning Board of Appeals there. He was a devotee of musical theatre, both as an actor and supporter of several theatre groups. He also had a passion for classic Hollywood movies and was well known amongst his family and friends for his "Fred's Flicks". An amateur radio enthusiast, he was an Expert class operator with the call sign W1NYL. He was proud of being the author of several published books, including his work of the histories of both General Radio and Teradyne. He was the devoted father of Christopher Van Veen and his wife Denise of Brookline, NH, Lucy Van Laarhoven and her husband Brian of Southborough, MA, and Amy Van Veen of Southborough,, MA. Loving grandfather of James Van Veen and his wife Crystal of Pepperell, MA, Kathryn Van Veen of Brookline, NH, Emily and Eric Van Laarhoven, both of Southborough, MA and Duncan Palmer of Worcester, MA. Great grandfather of Brookelyn Van Veen of Pepperell, MA. Brother of the late Virginia Miscioscia and her late husband Joseph of Dorchester, MA. Funeral will be held Thursday August 24th from the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center at 12 Noon followed by a funeral Mass in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center at 1 pm. A reception will follow in Concord's Colonial Inn. Visiting hours at the Dee Funeral Home will be on Wednesday August 23rd from 5 to 8 pm. Donations in his memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.
