Frederick D. MacNeill, Jr., 94, formerly of Concord, passed away at Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley in Littleton on Sunday, May 5, 2024. He was the beloved husband of the late Anita C. (Venti) MacNeill.
Fred was born in Jamaica Plain on September 28, 1929 as the son and only child of the late Frederick and Agnes (Thompson) MacNeill. He grew up in West Roxbury, and attended Boston Public Schools, including the Robert Gould Shaw Middle School, and graduated from the Boston English High School with the class of 1947. He then went on to study at Scott Carbee Art School in the city.
Fred was drafted into the Army in 1951, and served in the Korean War as a radio operator with the 5th Armored Division. Promoted to Corporal, he was honorably discharged in 1953.
For more than twenty years, Fred worked professionally as a Typewriter Technician for Remington Rand in the Boston area. During these years, Fred continued his art education at Vesper George School of Art in Boston, and honed his skills as a professional landscape and seascape artist.
In the early 1960's, Fred met the love of his life Anita (Venti) MacNeill, from Concord, MA. They were married in 1965, started a family with their two sons, and settled in Concord, MA. Fred and Anita lovingly supported their kids through their academic and athletic achievements. As empty nesters, they traveled extensively across the U.S. West and Canada, visiting numerous National Parks. Fred would always have his camera in hand to provide him with inspiration for his next painting.
A prolific and award-winning self-employed Artist, Fred's studio at his Concord home was a source of pride and the place he put his talent to use on beautiful oil and watercolor paintings. His work is represented in many private and corporate collections. He was a member of numerous art societies and galleries, including the Guild of Boston Artists, Rockport Art Association, North Shore Art Association, National Park Academy of the Arts, Powers Gallery, Francesca Anderson Fine Art, Concord Art Association, and the New England Watercolor Society.
Fred will also be remembered for this strong faith in God, and his numerous personal and professional friendships, that endure to this day.
