Obituary

Fred J. Anderson, of Concord, MA, formerly of New London, NH, Vero Beach, FL, New Canaan,CT and Larchmont, NY passed away peacefully with family by his side on March 11, 2011. He was born in New Rochelle, New York, on January 2, 1921 to the late Charles A. and Katchen (Geist) Anderson. Fred joined the US Army in 1943 after receiving a Degree in Engineering from Cornell University. Captain Anderson served as a spotter pilot for the 69th Infantry Division during WWII, engaged in Belgium, Germany and in the Battle of the Bulge. "Lucky Freddy" received the Air Medal and Letter of Commendation for Outstanding Performance in 35 aerial sorties.Upon returning from the war, Fred joined his brother, Curt, as a partner in Mechtronics Corporation. Using his engineering acumen and never ending imagination, Fred designed and built the first point-of-purchase display vacuum-form machine and revolutionized the industry. In 1946 he met the love of his life Eleanor "Elly" Gallagher on a ski trip in the Berkshires. After a three year courtship, they married and settled in Larchmont, NY where they raised their five children. They spent 27 years in Larchmont where Fred was very active at St. John and Paul Church and served on the Parish Council. Fred didn't just show up for life, he fully participated in it. An avid tennis player and sailor, he was equally adept at rigging a sail or serving an ace. He loved to entertain and make others smile. Whether performing a pantomime of "Be My Love," telling a joke or story, or carving a beautiful bird, rocking horse or car, all were richer for the experience. More than anything else he loved spending time with family and friends. His grandchildren were the jewels in his crown. He touched the lives of all who knew him and will always be remembered.In addition to Elly, he is survived by his children, C. Gary Anderson and his wife Jean Collier of Stratford CT, Debi Peterson and her husband Randy of Rio Rancho, NM, Timothy Anderson and his wife Leisa of Fresno, CA, Donna Krug and her husband Peter of Acton, MA, Chris Anderson and his wife Debbie of Westport, CT, his grandchildren, Megan Krug Roszak and her husband Mike of San Francisco, CA, Michael Krug of Boston, Katchen Anderson and Mark Anderson, both of Fresno, CA, Christopher Anderson, Emily Anderson, and Michael Anderson, all of Westport, CT. He was the brother of the late Frances Hjort, Victor C. Anderson, and Curtis A. Anderson and father-in-law of the late Doris Buckman. Visitation: Visiting hours at the Dee Funeral Home will be held on Monday, March 14th in the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center from 3 to 6:30 PM. Service: Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, March 15th at 10 AM in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord. Officers of the U. S. Army will present military honors following the Mass. Concord's town flag will fly at half staff on Tuesday in recognition of Mr. Anderson's service to his country during World War II.
