Obituary

Francis B. Magurn, 97 of Concord, MA passed away peacefully at his home August 2, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. Born October 7, 1914 to Francis C. and Mary B. Magurn. Husband of 62 years to Charlotte E. Magurn (Cain) and devoted father to Francis B. Magurn of Littleton MA, C. Ellen Magurn of Montpelier VT, Janet C. Magurn of Concord MA and Walter A. Magurn of Chelmsford MA. After completing a degree in diesel engineering Fran began a rewarding career with Massachusetts Institute of Technology Radiation Laboratory in Cambridge. He was deployed with MIT-Lincoln Laboratory directly to the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces as a civilian engineer to support the invasion of Europe. Following WWII Fran was involved in developing global radar installations for Lincoln Lab. Much of his work was centered around the research and development of radar technology and included various projects for the NASA space program. Throughout his 43 years at Lincoln Lab Fran maintained his passion and dedication to the expansion of technology and innovation. Throughout his life he displayed commitment to the community in his roles as Assistant Director of Massachusetts AARP, active membership as a Silver Haired Legislator and involvement with The Massachusetts Governor's Council on Elder Affairs. Consistent with his commitment to education and learning, Fran also participated in the Intergenerational Program at Concord Carlisle High School and Thoreau Elementary School. Fran's love for the outdoors included camping with his family, fishing and cycling; in fact in 1980 he received a bicycle for Christmas renewing his love of the sport with daily rides through neighboring towns. Fran built and raced midget race cars and still holds the track record at Seekonk Speedway in Seekonk, Ma. He owned and piloted his own airplane and often used it to get to the race track. Francis leaves behind his loving wife Charlotte E. Magurn, their son Colonel Francis B. Magurn and his wife Joanne Coleman, their children Francis, Katherine and Brian of Littleton MA, daughter C. Ellen Magurn, her husband Harold A. Mayforth and their sons Nicholas, Francis and Charles Mayforth of Montpelier VT, daughter Janet C. Magurn, her husband Mitchell Beard and their daughter Nora Beard Magurn of Concord, MA and son Walter A. Magurn and his wife Catherine of Chelmsford MA. He is also survived by his brother Albert C. Magurn and Leslie M. Luppold of Concord, MA, sisters Mary M. Giles of Naples, FL, Martha M. Ivey of Torrance, CA. Esther M. Cappazzoli and her husband Edward (Cap)of Escondido, CA. and sister Louise Smersh of Everett, WA. as well as many adoring nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Barbara M. Keizer of Concord, brothers Walter R. of Redondo Beach, CA. and George F. of South Yarmouth, MA. Cemetery: Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord. Visitation: Visiting hours at the Dee Funeral Home will be held on Tuesday, August 7th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. Service: Funeral Wednesday, August 8th from the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, CONCORD CENTER at 8 AM followed by a funeral Mass in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord at 9 AM.
