Francis D. Curran, 83, of Concord, died Tuesday, September 1st at Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington. He was the beloved husband for 58 years of Barbara (Albani) Curran.
Born in Concord on October 25, 1931 he was the son of the late Edward Sr. and Catherine (Gannon) Curran.
Mr. Curran attended Concord Public Schools and graduated from Concord High School in 1951. He was Captain of the 1950 undefeated Concord High School Football Team and competed in the Piedmont Bowl in North Carolina.
From 1951 to 1956, he honorably served as Airman first class in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
For thirty-one years, he was employed by the Town of Concord and served as the first manager in the Transportation Department for Concord Public Schools. His work has led to many of the safety innovations that are implemented by school buses today.
Mr. Curran was a long time member of the National Association of Public Transportation and the Massachusetts Association of Public Transportation. He also enjoyed camping and fishing.
In addition to his wife, Barbara, survivors include his children, David Curran and his wife Claudia of Concord, Mary Curran Bendel of Hudson, NH, and Timothy Curran of Ayer, his grandchildren, Justine Curran, Lindsey Moalli, Elizabeth Curran, Michael, Brian, Allison, and Robert Bendel, and Timothy and Christine Curran, and his great-granddaughter, Sophia Laney.
His brother, Edward D. Curran, Jr. of Concord, predeceased him in December of 2014.
Funeral will be held on Wednesday, September 9th at 9:30 am from the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center, followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 am in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center.
Burial will follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery where officers of the United States Air Force will present military honors.
Visiting hours are Tuesday, September 8th from 4 to 8 pm in the Dee Funeral Home where representatives of the Concord Fire Department will serve as honor guard.
Concord's Town Flag will fly at half-staff on Wednesday, September 9th in recognition of Mr. Curran's service to his country in the United States Air Force.
